easyJet have today announced they are to launch flights between Birmingham and Belfast International as from the 22nd October.

The route will initially fly daily and from the 29th October fly 12 times a week.

Birmingham is a brand new market for easyJet and Im sure the airport will be hoping this will lead to many more flights being launched by the airline. Especially if the likes of BMI Baby fail to secure a new buyer and is shut down, which at the moment is looking likely.

This is already quite a busy route with the airport, with BMI Baby currently flying twice daily and FlyBE operating seven flights a day, but these all fly to Belfast City.

Edit:
easyjet did operate from Birmingham a while back during the winter seasons to a ski Destination. I think this was Geneva or Grenoble, and was flown weekly.

Actually and only for December-March, EZY flies BHX-GVA 9-weekly during the winter and 1x weekly BHX-GNB (based on the week starting 7th Jan, 2013).

Indeed.

This is basically the replacement for the soon-to-be departure of BmiBaby, it does mean having to trek all the way up to Belfast International though rather than a quick jaunt to the city airport......

It will be interesting to see if/how this affects FlyBe. If U2 did set up a base at BHX as rumored I don't think BE would be too happy with competition on JER, GLA, EDI, MXP etc...

Wonder if EZ would look at taking on WWs BHX-NOC route after their last run in with FR at NOC. BE and EIR likely watching that route also.

FWIW, I saw a U2 flight in from GVA (checked the arrivals) on either the 5th or 6th April at BHX.

I was just going by their booking engine. Perhaps their ealry April flights aren't yet loaded.

easyJet don't fly anywhere in the republic of Ireland - I can't see them starting a flight there from BHX.

I find this a rather strange move by Easyjet, they move out of EMA and then decide to move into BHX. I admit that maybe with the demise of WW there will be a market for them to tap into.

I flew into BHD in the summer and am sure it is a more convenient airport than BFS. With Flybe going to BHD, will there be a market for EZY going into an airport which is further away from the centre of Belfast?

Undoubtedly that's exactly the reason for this move, step one from a current base is the best start. It's the proverbial toe in the door pending WW's likely demise.

I suspect this is partially a "cock block" move - EIR were rumoured to be considering BFS-BHX.

Lets not get carried away here. Sure, WW's likely demise may well have something to do with it but otherwise BFS is a base so flying from there to a none base is nothing too unusual. The fact is that Easyjet makes more money from it's Continental bases and LGW and with a squeeze on fleet size, they aren't going to start throwing planes into BHX. But i maybe wrong.

Not everyone goes to Central Belfast. Plus EZY competes with BE. on several Belfast routes successfully.

Indeed, not everyone is going to Belfast. Belfast International is more central to more of Northern Ireland than BHD.

It's not all about the Belfast Market.

A potentially significant step for easyjet from BHX moving to year round routes from Belfast and maybe from other home bases. A step up from the winter ski routes of the last 2/3 years and maybe a place holder to a base if bmibaby close or are taken over by a weak partner.

The next 2-3 months will be interesting for BHX and EMA in this respect and there could be a battle between Ryanair/Easy at EMA and these two plus Flybe/Monarch at BHX. I just hope they take on bmibaby staff if the worst happens.
