Why don't you join the Airbus Network Forum and ask there. There are many informed Airbus people and one of them may have an answer.

Does anyone know what is being used for the tail skid during these tests? I know Boeing uses a large piece of oak for thier Vmu tests. But wood doesn't spark like that!!!!!
Surely they wouldn't use the actual tail skid on the aircraft, would they?

The second and third A340-600's which are for VS in 2003 will be part of the test programme. Thats why they will not be delivered till after some of the later aircraft.
As for the tail skid, maybe AI is testing the real damage you get when you do a tail strike !!!!!, not the damage to a piece of wood !!
