Some thing we hear in almost every on-board Smisek announcement. That is an investment of $550 million a lot of money and it comes on the brink of a 200 narrowbody purchase, many 787's and A350's.

Have we seen or felt these improvements yet? How long do they plan to take to make the said improvements? I know there will be improvements to their A320 series overhead compartments..but with such a big order of 737's how big and how old will the Airbus' be? Any pics of the NEW improvements?

Does this $550 million be spent fixing the main cabin on their 747's which even Smisek says are woefully in bad shape and old fashioned etc versus business and First! Have UA released the breakdown of that $550? Does it include p.s.?

While $550, is a log of money, there is no other more expensive business to run. Will we one day say "wow, United looks fabulous!"

We definitely have seen some in the form of increased cabin modifications. Some is yet to come.

They are retrofitting the sUA 777's which include new First and Biz seats as well as Econ. They are keeping the BizFirst cabins in the sCO aircraft.

They already retrofitted the First/Biz cabins on the 744's. They are in the process of retrofitting some of the domestic 763's for international service (two class).

Not to mention another delivery of a brand new 739 the other day.

There is also a 3-class UA 763 in the process of being refit with traditional CO layout.

Will all aircraft eventually have AVOD installed? I would imagine with the exception of the 744s.

You mean the two class domestic UA 763s? Of which there are 14 being converted to two class International standards.

And the three class UA 763s.

So far, those aircraft that already have the First Class private pod seats (eg: 747's, ex UA 777 and some ex UA 767's) are and those due for a Global First Class cabin and seat, will only have the (Nice) but CO business lie flat. It seems their official "we will be a 3 class airline" is on a timer!

No new aircraft will be fitted as far as I know with Global First (that's the new name right?) The 787's will be 2 class, all remaining ac (except exUA 777's) will be 2 class. Has their been talk of the A350's being 3 class? Seems like the 747 will be replacement, unless Boeing gives them 20 free 748's!

Given the enormous international long haul routes United has to BIG destinations from 6 hubs - corp accounts with thousands of VPs to C-suite who are allowed to but F, plus 6 Systemwides for 1K and higher have earned that treat and select UA for that ability, along with the world's million/billionaires - there doesn't seem enough ac with F to compete with so many world airlines who take such tremendous pride in their First product.

So as I think of $550,000 spent as itemized above is great and needed. I hope UA fliers will see and feel those changes- you certainly do on the new retrofited 767-400.

So for $550,000 smackers I was hoping for more F cabins for UA!

Almost every ex CO aircraft I have been on this year has economy plus. Since I am 6' 3" tall, this is great as I will not always be in F. So, yes they are improving the A/C.

Why is their so much bashing of Jeff Smisek on Anet? As a 1K, I am disappointed (and sometimes angry) at the glitches of the merger. But I don't think that Smisek wants to screw the customers or employees.. It is in his best interest for the merger to succeed. However, he has a business to run, which means difficult choices and many trade offs. It will take time to make it work and I know that, so I make the best of it.

One last point: the planes of ALL airlines will be full as they continue to cut capacity to maintain profitability, as they should. However, that means that air travel is basically now a commodity. It is also now a Wal Mart commodity because the public want's that pricing model. Bottom line is that the travel experience on U.S. carriers will be mediocre most of the time and terrible some of the time. Be careful what you wish for!

Isn't that part of the plan to modernize those birds in the main cabin since they are way behind the competition in Y. It wouldn't make sense not too.

I thought I read somewhere that they don't plan on having them around long enough to warrant the cost of upgrading them.

Absolutely! The consumers' obsession with low price as the determining factor has resulted in the airline industry as it is today. It took a long time, but management finally realized there was no other response to that demand. This is one case in which "you get what you pay for" is true. Think about it....in many cases, fares are no more than they were 20 years ago. Yet the cost of fuel, planes, airports, etc., have gone up up up up. So what do you expect?

PTVs in Y are not planned but there have been quite a few reports of WiFi being fitted on board that will stream video content to your iPad ect as well as the internet on overseas flights. In Seat power in Y is also being talked about.

United should really consider AVOD in Y on the 744's. It's needed badly. Imagine people who fly ORD-NRT...

That's the precise reason why I avoided UA this summer, especially the 767's.

Any idea how much longer their going to be in the fleet? Must be at least quite a few more years considering their putting the 744s into UA/CO colors.

I can't see the point of adding wireless streaming video to the 747's without adding in-seat power. I don't believe they've announced that they will add power for Y seats. Without power, many devices will last less than half of the typical duration of 747 flights that United operate.

As you are very much aware, no.

There will be future aircraft delivered with 3 cabins. Just like they opted to keep the ones with 3 cabins they have now. And as a GS, you know that.

They don't need more.

Not necessarily all of them, just the CO-ordered 787-8 models being delivered starting this fall.

True. LH will be dropping F on some of the 747-400s and all A340-300s, as I understand.

I believe the plan is to go with content streaming over wi-fi, in-seat power, and the option to use (rent) devices on board if you don't have your own to use (free).

The streaming wireless video on the 744 sounds like it will work out to be cheaper than AVOD with the video screens. I think its a great idea if they put in-seat power in as well given the length of the missions. As pads become more and more prevalent, folks bring their own entertainment with them on trips.

I thought I read somewhere the improvements should be done by the end of 2013.

As for additional a/c delivered with F cabins, the guess would be the 359's would have them along with some of the 789's. They might retire their oldest 772's fitted with F as the new 789's come online one for one to maintain capacity control.

The 744's will exit as the 359's arrive.
