Rumor: SK To Acquire 6 Ex-IB MD-87s

Perhaps the demise of the SK Mad Dog fleet will be delayed a little bit further, as word is SK have acquired 6 ex-IB MD-87s. I don't have an official news link, so in keeping with forum rules I will call this a "rumor." But it appears to be corroborated by airfleets.net:

Perhaps our Nordic a.netters can confirm that these aircraft have been purchased outright and will enter service in 2012.

Also, from afar, I'm curious to know why SK would acquire additional aircraft while in the process of phasing the fleet out. Interested to hear from those who may have a closer view of the situation. Opinions or otherwise...

The aircraft were operated by Spanair but I believe dry-leased from former parent SAS, so now that Spanair went bust the aircraft went back to the Swedish registry, but SAS has no intention to actually operate them. SE-DMM in your list for example, has already been flown to HIO in the US for scrapping and now been re-registered as N292EA.

While the dry-lease arrangement applied to several MD-87s that were delivered new to SK and operated briefly by JK, I don't think that was the case with these six frames. Rather, a little research shows these six frames were delivered new to IB and were never operated by SK previously. Having said that, I see SE-DMM has been re-registered as you mention. The other frames don't show to be in Corsair Two's possession, but if they are ultimately scrapped, it wouldn't be surprising.

Is this really a wise move? They are hardly efficient, and with rising fuel costs, this will not be a great purchase to counter that.

I like the MDs very much but with the current fuel costs, this would be a strange move.

SK doesn't operate 717's so far, so introducing yet another type in the fleet would bring even higher costs.

Re the MD87's;

I guess they can purchase those 6 for a cheap price, and SK might keep them airworthy and keep as backup? The MD87 is a great aircraft to sub with CRJ-900's or just as regular spare aircraft in case when other aircraft break down.
They might just delay a few months before those Maddogs go to scrap until SAS own new Airbusses get delivered.

And assuming they would do that, they would not be able to operate the planes with the same pilots and that would be extremely costly. The MD-80:s and the 717 differ a lot in the flight deck.

SAS does not operate 717:s. The examples in the group are in Blue1 AOC. No SAS pilots are qualified to fly 717:s as far as I know.

The topic is about getting some temporary second hand planes. As they already operate the B717 (via Blue One), the introduction of the 717 would not be too costy and enables them to dump the lovely but very fuel inefficient MD-82 much sooner.

Re-introducing the MD-87 will be good news though for the aviation entusiast in Nord, Central and Western Europe as most of the daily traffic consist of ERJs, B737s and A320s.

Consider that they currently are dumping MD-87s, this rumour is unlikely. It could be that they have ownership of the aircraft and are thus getting them back, but they will not fly for SAS again. During the las few months SAS has sent three MD87s for part out and scrap to the USA

What's interesting is these 6 were not previously owned by SK - unless there was a sale and leaseback arrangement with IB that I'm not aware of. As I mentioned earlier, several MD-87s were owned by SK and returned by JK in recent years, but these frames don't seem to fit that bill.

An MD-87 would arguably be the cheapest variant, for a 1991-build, to acquire. We'll see if the remaining 5 are sold to leasing companies/scrappers or enter service for a short term capacity bump.

I am pretty sure the others will also just be flown to the US and scrapped like SE-DMM. Let's see what happens to SE-DMN, has just been registered in Sweden to SAS Sverige. SE-DMM was registered on February 7 and exported to the US on April 17. It had first been flown from MAD to ARN and then from there via KEF and BGR to HIO in Spanair colours arriving on March 20. These MD-87s were added to the Spanair fleet when SAS still owned 90% of Spanair and at the time quite a few aircraft were owned by SAS or leased by SAS and sub-leased to Spanair. I cannot confirm this was the case for these aircraft but it would be the most likely explanation.
