Yes, but still doesn't explain why they couldn't use 748 (where as 73H tells us the difference between winglets and no winglets). Usually, letters are used to reduce confusion (73G instead of 737 for 737-700 for obvious reasons, etc.)
Anyway, it's good that a date has been set. Although I haven't seen any press release, so many this is a placeholder for ordinary flights, and we could see it come earlier with hopefully a big ceremony for inaugeral flight.

Perhaps because the code 748 has previously been used for the HS748? Are any of those still in scheduled service anywhere in the world?
Roughly 30 still in service. Around half of those are in service in Canada.

Has anyone seen any cabin pics? I'm interested to see what it'll look like (whether they opt for the sky interior with 787-style multi-colour lighting, what kind of seats they get etc).
Also does the 748i have the electronic window dimmers or standard window shades?
Is this going to be the true First to Fly commercial flight for the new 748i
In fact Qatar Amiri are the true First to Fly the 748i but not reserved to us Joe Public.
Any news on crew training flights?
I will be in the middle of moving 1 June so I very much doubt I will be able to make that first FRA-IAD flight.

As far as I know the cabin styling is based on the 787, not sure about the window dimmers but as the 747-8 does not have the 787 style windows I believe it will be standard window shades.

Wow, you're not kidding! A one-way ticket is pricing at 2795 Euros or US$3,676. Making it part of a roundtrip doesn't bring the price down appreciably.
I'd say they're jacking up the price for this special flight but all UA/LH FRA-IAD flights that day are showing at this fare on LH's web site.
So much for being a part of this inaugural...

Where did you check? I just checked a flight on lufthansa.com departing FRA on the 2nd of June with the 748 and picked any random date flying back to IAD on 748i again and it shows me a total of: € 891,48.
The flight FRA-IAD on June 1st is not bookable on 748i, I guess only invited guests and press will be on that?

...I bet you will see many pics of the 748-7 on Wednesday, after the Roll-In Ceremony took place in FRA.
1500 employees are invited (there was a lucky draw for the tickets). Cams are allowed and the inside could be visited also for a short glimpse (but pics from inside are not welcomed due to the mass of people).
Got a ticket
I try to take good pics
Why the ac doesn't have the abbreviation 748?
The plane is not called 748 nor 747-800, it's called 747-8. Under this aspect, if the short cut would be 748, the "inofficial" company wide name soon would be really 748.
Many happy landings to this fantastic aircraft! Looking forward seeing her daily on short final soon!!!

I am still trying tp see if I can get the return flight in Business to try the new seats.
There is no award seating available in F for either of the flights on 1 June most probably not any time soon.
Early in June will be a very busy time for me but I can't miss out on this.
I want 2012 to be a Double Inaugural year ANA 787 Dreamliner and LH 747-8i new Lady Bee.
I will go to the NASM to see Space Shuttle Discovery and Concorde FA between flights.

There should be one for departure and one for arrival tomorrow morning in FRA. Can't seem to find a video of the ceremony though. Maybe it'll show up on http://twitter.com/#!/BoeingAirplanes/.
I guess today we should find out the name of D-ABYA... Does anyone know yet?
I would not go that far.
I'd say 747-8i is a Queen Mary 2 of the skies while the A380 is a Oasis of the Seas and the 787-8 is a Queen Victoria.
Concorde is of course the QE2 as they teamed together and belonged to a league of their own.
I will have more precise impressions of the 747-8i after I fly on the two inaugurals from Frankfurt to Washington Dulles and back on 1 June.
I will be beating my own record with a double whammy inaugural 787-8 Dreamliner with ANA and 747-8i with Lufthansa which will be my second new Boeing airplane inaugural in one calendar year.
The 747-8 is not really a new aircraft type. She is more like an extended and improved version of the 747-400 while the 787-8 Dreamliner is a totally new type of aircraft built with Toray carbon fiber composite materials.

Thank you. I won't catch much of the flight on departure but I'll look where they are at early morning until they land in Frankfurt.
It would be great if they park right by the ANA 787. I remember we landed with the Dreamliner inaugural flight very early morning. The LH 747-8i and the ANA 787-8 one by the other would make for some really great pictures. Big Sister and Little Sister together at Frankfurt airport.

Who iis inside the plane? There must be guests (I bet not in the whY cabin ) on the flight with several pilots and cabin crew members.
I can imagine what it must be like to fly (and party) on an almost empty brand new aircraft!
This ferry flight must be a great flight!
They are getting near Frankfurt airport. I bet they are anxious to see the reception the new Lufthansa Lady Bee will receive when they land and lots on the ground will be waiting for them!!
Happy reception ceremony to all those who are there waiting! I hope there will be lots of pictures of the plane from inside and out!!

Once again on this topic, I believe the 747-8I will like the -430 be named after German Federal States. The A380 is named after major Cities worldwide and from Germany.
The very first D-ABYA, the 747-130 was named "Nordrhein-Westfalen" maybe the new D-ABYA will be as well.....just a thought

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 40): I would not say that the 747-8i is a beauty. She is a bit like the A380 in her own ways with a smaller body and thinner wings.
She is a beauty. The wings are more elegant than the 744 ones for sure, the engines fit in dimension, all the part visible before the wing is linear of double height, the tail behind the wings looks a little bit too thin in proportion. But much better than the 788 - which looks like the short fat sister of the 77W which is average looking itself, the most elegant twin still is the 767-400.

Completely agree on that one. I just saw her from the same angle I saw 5 LH and Two UA 744 at the same light within an hour, and from this 20 seconds view of her (10 I needed to realize it was HER) judge that the look has improved. This first impression of mine was more favorable in terms of elegance than the first impression of the competing ULA...

Yes, but IAD, LAX and ORD are the first destination. So BLR and DEL have to wait a while. That's what they said yesterday.
I think it suits the 747-8i much better but I have chosen a variation "Big Bee". The A380 engines are too quiet - can barely hear them. The 747-8i will be noisy same as the 747-400s.
