Hey all, ran a search and couldn't find it here,

What are DL's 744 routes this summer?

How many are in service and how many are on standby/stored (I heard one was stored but the last I heard from that was in December)

Are any being phased out or retired this year?

Thanks, Z

15 are active
1 is in storage in MZJ

Currently at any given time 1-2 are out of service for cabin mods being done in Asia

No aircraft are being retired this year and/or in the forseeable future. The aircraft in storage is supposedly coming out of MZJ in August and will undergo cabin mods.

By summer that requires 11 airplanes to fly the schedule. In addition there there will still be 1-2 frame out of service for mods, plus an additional 1-2 for maintenance and charter work.

Looks like the old status thread has been archived. Any updates on how many are in service now? My g/f is flying NRT-JFK on DL on Wednesday night (er...Thursday afternoon there because of the time difference), and I'm curious whether she will get a refurbed bird. This is her first flight on DL; being Japanese, she usually flies ANA when she's paying for it. She will be in EC.

That's to bad since that plane was almost pretty much always full! And even observed one time when actually heading to a different gate on that same concourse in which you could tell the flight from Japan had arrived!
Very nice people I might add as well when passing them.
However though I hope things return even for them because it always has been a popular route with Minneapolis.

I think four are complete, but I'm not 100% sure on it. Unfortunately it looks like the flight your friend will be on is scheduled to be in the old configuration.

What happened to the LAX-NRT route on the 747?
I'm planning a trip to NRT sometime in the middle to end of July; which of those routes to you all recommend?

I am flying that route in June & July and am scheduled for the A330. I have flown a 744 on that route before, during the summer, but it doesn't look like it this year. I like the A330 and all, but I like to look out the window and see two engines hanging on each wing, it just looks cool!

This means there are more DL 744s operating through NRT than any other airport....

What's with the registrations ending in "US"?

The US suffix on registrations dates itself back to the late 1950s when Donald Nyrop that wanted to eventually change the Northwest name to US Airlines. That never happened.

This long predates US Airways where their name didn't exist until the late 70's and USAirways still used the AL code for another 10 years.

Starting in the mid-90's NW switched over to using registrations of NW (NB for the A319s). Hence why many of the early build A320s, 757 (5500s), 744s still retain the US suffix.

Delta likes to keep the registrations from earlier owners. DL has a few ex-TWA 75s that retain the TW suffix.

And until recently DC-9s with the RW suffix. I saw one in PWM about four years ago.

How about the Delta 767-400's that are MH...isn't MH Malaysian Airlines?

Delta's 767-400s came direct from Boeing. DL and CO are, unfortunately, the only two airlines that ever purchased and operated the -400. All are still with their original two owners. One -400 airframe was built as a potential AWACS kind of platform for the USAF, but the program didn't happen. I think that one ended up with DL also, so maybe that's the MH?

The E-10 prototype languished at PAE for awhile before being sold to Bahrain Royal Flight for conversion into a VIP plane. Last seen languishing (again) in Hamburg, if I'm not mistaken.

MH was the reg Boeing used for testing, so Delta just went with NXXXMH on all 21 aircraft. All 21 are owned by Delta and have nothing to do with that rat bas....Leo.

yep.
25 panamair : Those three are scheduled to be done by early June. Having seven refurbed aircraft will allow them to operate daily service on the following routes b
26 mjzair : Don't mean to hijack this, but what is pilot staffing like for this aircraft at DL? Where are there 747 bases? How long is an average trip for a crew.
27 displane : Nothing scheduled to LHR for the Olympics as of yet? Or are they sticking with 777/330 and 767's?
28 michman : I believe that DTW is currently the only 747 pilot base.
29 burnsie28 : Which is supposidly going to return to service on 5/15
30 NASCARAirforce : Do some of the 744s from Asia continue on to other airports though? A few years back the 744 flew MNL-NGO-DTW using the same plane on continuation, w
31 premobrimo : DTW is the only 744 base. The schedule is still very similar to what NW always did. The pilots deadhead to JFK and ATL the night before to start trips
32 xdlx : Nope...Mullins could not HOLD on to Jack!
33 wjcandee : Exactly. That's why I used the word "myth". But at the time, there definitely were conspiracy theories floating around that the MH was for "Mullin Ho
34 wjcandee : How far in advance are the aircraft planned? More specifically, do we know whether the Saturday JFK-NRT will be on a refurbished 744?
35 cokepopper : That flight isn't suppose to be scheduled with the 74S until May 7th
36 michman : When try to book a flight, the seat maps will show whether it is 74S or not. They should be pretty accurate for several months out now. ATL-NRT goes
37 FlyASAGuy2005 : 275 does get the 74S tomorrow. Operated the route for a while off and on as well.
38 wjcandee : Thank you. I see the listed amenities change on the flight information screen consistent with what people have been saying. Looks like it was the 74S
