Here's a link to pictures of a major #2 engine fire on an Eastern DC-8-21. I think it's Photoshopped; what do you guys think?

Definitely real. I have pages clipped from a Time or a Life of that week with these pics and another of the DC-8 after landing, still smoking, with the headline, "A cool captain brought this one home in one piece" or similar. In the thread you quote, there is the incident report summary.

Great pics, thanks for sharing.

I too have the original photospread that I cut out of a LIFE magazine that my grandfather had stored in his garage. My eyes nearly popped out of my head the day I came across those pictures flipping through that magazine. I don't think they had Photoshop in 1964!

I think you're right about that. There is some disconnect over the picture and the NTSB report however.

Huh...I read this as "one" engine, (as in, "an engine") not "number one" engine.

Same thought here. It doesn't say which engine, just that one engine failed.

Seems to me that it is a very real picture.
The following link gives a brief story of what happened on that flight by the Capt who was flying.
From the story and pictures, it appears that the #2 engine was the one that exploded.

Not to change the subject slightly, but I remember reading about the Pan Am 707 that departed from SFO in the 1960s and the engine and part of the wing caught fire. I want to say the engine fell off and landed on a warehouse. Someone had a picture of it taken from a distance while driving on the freeway, but the picture was very similar with a long fireball going behind it. The plane landed safely I believe at Travis AFB.

I think you guys are thinking about the Pan Am 707 that had an engine explosion and fire that burned off 1/3 of the right wing out of SFO. That was a major story in 1965, and here's the Life magazine article. Amazing photos!

One reason I question this authenticity of the DC-8 engine fire is the date - February 13, 1964. It shows the final version of the Eastern hockey stick color scheme, but according to Robert J. Serling's history of Eastern, the first experimental colors went on a DC-8 in May 1964 and the final hockey stick scheme didn't appear until fall. So either it's a real picture taken of later engine fire or it's a fake.

I was just reading the same information, in a different book. It said the same thing ... that the final version of the "New Mark" colour scheme was not applied to an aircraft until early 1965.

But, if you look at that picture, it does look like it has been altered. The windows do not look "right".

Or someone's got a date wrong. Not everything has to be a conspiracy.

If you read the history page linked above, it indicates that the incident was in 1967. Well after the hockey stick was introduced. Keep in mind that old records were digitized either by hand or by optical character recognition of a dubious quality.

I don't think there's any question that the incident happened, however. And there's nothing about the images themselves that appears fake.

Also, if you copy the image, then blow it up ... the registration looks incorrect. It looks more that it ends in a 2 than a 4.

The aircraft in the photo has exit outlines which didnt appear until mid 1966.The first aircraft that I saw in the full Hockey Stick scheme was Electra N5527 in September 1964 here in HSV.N5524 had the experimental scheme with the logo on the fin first came through here in August of 1964.Most Eastern people wanted that scheme, but Floyd Hall didnt want any falcon likeness on the tail.

Yeah, I missed the post linking it to a 1967 incident. No question, it happened and the photos are real, just the original story I started the thread with was wrong about the date. Here's the link to the NTSB synopsis, they even got the engine right!

It could not have been in 1964 because the FAA did not mandate door outlines to be painted until 1966. So my suspicion is that, unless the date in question is wrong, these photos are faked.

I think we've established that it occurred in 1967, not 1964.

The photo is real, it is just enhanced. It was very common back in the '60 to enhance photos with water color paints or pens to make them look more real. What they have painted as orange 'fire' might just be smoke.
