Pax Stoped Plane From Taking Off...

This was in the Swiss media today. I have translated it from German to English:

More than 250 pax of a spanish charter aircraft (Air Plus Comet) have stopped it's aircraft from departing. The plane was about to depart from Spain (probably Madrid to the Dominican Replublic). On the way to the runway, the aircraft lost fuel on the left wing. A passenger filmed that.

The pilot wanted to take off anyway. He told that it's normal to lose fuel. When he was preparing for take off, the angry pax were walking arround and crying in the aircraft so they could not start and had to go back to the terminal.

Does anybody know more about this "incident"? What aircraft was involved? What about the airline (Air Plus Comet)? And what do you think about this generaly?

Most likely it was an A310. I haven't heard anything yet about the incident.

Do you really think this is true? Every pilot would care about losing fuel and it's definitely not normal. The plane could probably not reach it's destination and the temperature of the exhaust would be hot enough to set everything on fire. Remember what happened to the AF Concorde.

I've seen the amateur video on french tv...impressive!
the air plus comet A310 outbound to santo domingo began to heavily lose kerosen while taxiing to runway....the captain did make an anoucement saying it was normal and everything was all right...then, most pax stood up and began shouting...only at this point the crew decided to go back to the gate fearing a riot inside the cabin
I don't understand the "normality" of the leak?? don't understand either the behavior of the crew...

I saw the same report on Swiss TV. It was an A310, as already stated.

I for one understand the reaction of the pax: I don't think, that an aircraft has to loose fuel while taxiing to the runway. Perhaps it is a simple thing, like full tanks and some valves spitting out, what was too much, but anyway, I would not feel very comfortable, if I would see it.

goddammit of course the captain should not takeoff in that situation!we had the same thing in 1988 when we where flying PanAm A310 from JFK to HEL the right wing leaked petrol like a river and noone cared about it so i told my mother that and she went to say the captain something is wrong we are loosing F****g! fuel!!so they fix it and we where delayed several hours but unbelievable no one seemed to care about it and the plane was about to takeoff.

Interesting to hear that the incidents talked about here both happened on an A310. Any particualr reason for this, eg. is it the only aircraft that may do this? Also, how much lost fuel are we talking about here, literally pouring out or the odd spit of fuel? Either way I know that I wouldn't feel comfortable in that situation and I wouldn't have been able to relax at all on that flight if it had taken off!

I remember an incident with a DL 767 in Zurich some years ago. The tower noticed a fuel-leak while the plane was on the way to the runway and forced the jet to stop immediately. Rescue-teams were on the site then.

So, it was surley a critical situation with this A310 too! No matter what the captain told the pax.

As the wing gets heated the fuel gets heated and expands, so it has to go somewheer or explode. So it gets vented overboard. A funny joke is when someone new is walking around teh airplane that always seem to walk right under the vent just when fuel starst to leak out. It is very normal in the summer and I see it daily when it gets very hot out

i saw it from the news that leak was not so bad that i experienced.but didnt look good either!what a enviroment polluting machines why the hell they put so much fuel that it leaks out?!

I also saw the video on the news this morning, and they said that the passengers are filing a joint complaint beacuse the pilot was holding back information from the passengers while the plane was leaking fuel. I can't believe that the pilot would say that it is normal for the a/c to leak. If there was one spark anywhere close to the a/c, bye bye.

they explained tonight on tv that,sooner, the plane had been prevented to push back because of a leak and that it had to be repaired:they showed the pictures of the A310 at the gate with jet-fuel spilled everywhere and firemen around.
The flight had been delayed in order to fix the leak and while taxiing it began to leak again.

cv640: I understand what you mean,but how come firemen where around spilling foam on the jet-fuel?? if that was so common they wouldn't bother with this...

They put foam of the fuel so in case something sparked it wouldn't blow anything up.

Does any one know where we can download this video from? I'd like to see it, and I don't blame the passengers for cutting up like that. They were concerned for their lives and the crew should have understood that.

my point is if spilling out fuel in hot weather was so normal like mentionned before,why firemen would be alerted?? do you imagine airports like CDG-JFK-LHR in summer??? each plane would have firemen at its feet! that's impossible

Here in Spain that mishap even started the national main news bulletin on TV yesterday. The plane was an A310 of Air Plus Comet taxiing for take off from Madrid to Puerto Plata (DR). The firemen confirmed that at least 1000 litres fuel were spilled onto the taxiway both times.

As some of you already stated, its incredible that the Captain did not take the problem seriously until the pax began standing up and shouting not to take off. My personal opinion is that the Captain did not know about the fuel spill and thus tried to calm down the pax until knowing something more about the incident. To me it looked like a broken port (left side) fuel vent valve, but for some reason the guys in the cockpit did not got any more info about it. Its also a pitty that the mechanics did not fix the problem the first time...

With this its clear that certain info from pax sitting at the windows is important to the flight crew!

The kerosene itself is not that flammable, but the fumes are. So outside it wouldn't be much of a problem if some is spilled. So the foam was probably not that important really, mostly to calm the audience down sort of speak.

Don't take that final scene in Die Hard 2 that seriously!!  Big grin

It was on the prime time news here in Australia too. I've never known a whole incident like it. In my opinion it was definitely not normal, the amount of fuel gushing out. What became of the Captain/crew afterwards regarding the incident? The passengers 'saved the day' in this case.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Yeah saw the news in Australia got it on tape. I fly a C152 and when the fuel overflows it comes out in drips. THis was pouring out as in a firehose or something, to explain the diameter or the leak.

It also showed all the passengers in the terminal afterwards protesting to the airline with security holding them back and everything.

I don't blame any of them personally.

I saw the video on the news. That looked pretty scary, maybe if no one saw that and reported it to the pilot, we would all be talking about an Air Plus Comet A310 crash.
