From NPR.org

Evelyn Bryan Johnson, a record-setting pilot who was born just six years after the Wright brothers made their historic flight, has died at the age of 102. Johnson, who began flying in 1944, holds the Guinness world record for the most hours logged by a female pilot — more than 57,000.

I must admit that I hadn't heard the name before, but I just read through her bio on Wikipedia. Very impressive lady...a true loss to the world. May she rest in peace.

I heard that interview and the news about her death this weekend. A true loss to aviation, not tragic as she obviously lived a terrific and fruitful life, but a loss nonetheless.

She logged more flight time than anyone except for one other person! And she continued to manage her local airport past the age of 100. That's a hell of an accomplishment. She was someone who cared for and loved what she did and she kept doing it as long as possible. She taught an awful lot of people to fly and mentored others over the years (any A.netter's?).

Quote:
She taught 5,000 student pilots before she stopped counting, and certified more than 9,000 for the Federal Aviation Administration. Nicknamed Mama Bird, she taught future pilots of jetliners and cargo planes, future airline executives and former Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee.

So here's to you Mrs. Evelyn Johnson, may your spirit continue to soar through the sky.
