JetBlue To Offer First Class Rumor.

A few years ago JetBlue was talking about offering First Class or a Premium Class Service. What happened to those plans? What would those passengers get? Right now JetBlue is a one class service airline and you get a snack box for purchase.

With the A321 coming next year, I suspect there will be some other changes at JetBlue and I would not be surprised to see more of a differentiation made between regular and premium seating. It goes against what the airline was founded on but that is now a 15 year-old ideal and the market forces changes. For now though, yes, first class is just a rumor...

If AA would like to "hook up" with B6 more formally, or even develop a broader codeshare of sorts, then adding First Class at B6 would be a step in the right direction. Additionally, it would help them battle VX as they start overlapping one another more down the road.

Having said that, a more defined premium economy, with more revenue enhancements, might be just fine for them.

I agree, but not so much because of AA but more so because of all the foreign code-share partners. B6 has been striking codeshare deals with foreign carriers and so it makes sense, for example, for someone flying in on EK business class and transfering to B6, to find a slightly better product on B6.

Do carriers make much money on domestic F, I have read on a DL investor power point only 11% of people actually pay for the F ticket. F is more to reward elites, which Jet blues FFP on not really that elite focused.

I would say if they are adding F it probably means some sort of hook up with AA/OW or feed for other international cariers.

AA: AA needs to get its own house in order and survive as a stand alone carrier. Then their Y product has to be brought up to B6 standards.

True...but I've also read that they are becoming a preferred carrier in the Boston market. B6 is kind of in quandary. On one hand they do connect BOS and JFK with some major biz markets, on the other, yes they also have the heavy leisure routes to Caribbean and Florida. Offering a decent F/C could also help it against AA and DL on the transcons out of JFK and as pointed out above against VX. I guess they could do select a/c with it but then I imagine that raises costs.

I remember People Express started adding f/c toward the end of its life in the 1980s.

There's been EML seats on the E190 for quite some time in rows 1 and 12. At least 2 more EML rows are being added to each Each E190.

It doesn't have to be an American style F/J product. It could be something as basic as what it exists in Europe where only the middle seat is blocked, and they'll give you slightly better "refreshments" and a newspaper onboard

If something happens it'll be close to that. I personally think you'll see a new product being introduced early 2013. Things have been pretty stale for sometime now and something new would be nice to change things up. I just don't see it being anything drastic.

Don't look for first class. Look beyond EML. Perhaps two rows of big seats?

Absolutely. Even to offer what is essentially a premium Y product will still act as a point of differentiation. As mentioned above on 'leisure' routes you will have quite a few pax willing to pay more for more comfort and the 'prestige' of "sitting upfront".

Well, B6 has been doing a lot of code share deals lately. I promise in every one of those meetings, the other carrier has said "will you be adding first class? Offering a premium connect product is important to us." I'm sure Emirates made that point emphatically. If they hear it enough, they will have to consider it. I think they will do it because it is only going to cost anything on the E190. They could add F Class to the A320 and have more pitch than the old days when they had 162 seats.

I think the idea of having an F class appeals to frequent fliers. Delta's domestic BusinessElite isn't that great, but at least it shows some semblance of appreciation for continued service. If B6 load factors aren't 100%, I don't see why they shouldn't add an F/C class, even if only 11% pay full fare.

Going the way of VX, with only two rows of an upper class, might be wise too.

That's what I thought too. It depends on what percentage of the traffic landing in JFK (passenger or revenue wise) would want to connect to premium ... vs ... economy. I think the balance will clearly point towards the latter and B6 is already very good at that ... better than most, if not all, Y class products in the USA.

Jetblue should do what it does best - provide affordable, consistent and classy transport for/from the NE (within the realm of economy class service).

Without slightly reducing seat pitch throughout the rest of the cabin, I don't see the inside of the plane getting any longer.
