Why Did US Go For The A321?

Why did US go for the A321 if they already have a fleet of 34 757's? The spat with Boeing couldn't have affected the decision too much and since the A321 doesn't stand out and US was a large Airbus customer already, a deal for them couldn't have been so sweet.

They got the A321 as part of their package deal with Airbus. Why not get it? It is common to the A319, and the A320. Crew training can be eased as has a common type rating. Flight attendants can learn the A321 in a matter of seconds as it is just like the other Airbusses, just longer.

Why go for more 757s, when you have the airbus?

I think the reason is that the 757 is a much more capable aircraft than the 321. It has a lot more payload/range, but if you do not need it then the extra weight only costs you money.
