This weekend is the NATO Summit in Chicago. I'm assuming most dignitaries will be using ORD for arrivals/depatures as they've warned of temporary closings of the Kennedy Expressway into downtown due to motorcades. I'm sure for security reasons it's hard to find out when the heads of state are arriving. However, I'm going to pose the question anyway. Anyone heard whether Friday or Saturday will be the day of arrival. This event should bring in very rare movements for this airport. I did hear that AF1 should be arriving Saturday. Unknown time of arrival. Also, here is a list of those invited to the Summit. Feel free to add a picture of the respective Government aircraft:

I presume Basescu will arrive using YR-LCB (ex. Tarom airlines). I acctually flew on this aircraft 4 times before it was converted to be Romanian version of "Air Force One".

Anybody know what long range aircraft Pakistan has in their Air Force? Will they use PIA's aircraft to fly to ORD? I can see some dignitaries bring business jets like the Falcon and the BBJ while some others use widebody aircraft. I have an idea of what some will bring but others may depend on availability.

Living in downtown should be very interesting this week. I live in the Gold Coast/Lincoln Park area and we don't expect any problems here. As I understand it, the Kennedy should only close for the President of Afganistan and Obama. Although he usually comes in by helicopter after arriving. Wonder if he'll stay at his home on the south side. Security is in full force and troops and other city police are coming in. Protest have already begun. Since I was in catering/inflight for most of years at Eastern, I imagine the catering companies tearing their hair out with all the ethnic foods they will have to come up with. I imagine that things and food stuff in cans and containers will come in the belly and moved up for the return. But dish washing and preparation has got to be secured. Most companies have told their folks to stay home Monday. I wonder too, how many of the people coming in will be commercial? The line up of parked aircraft should be quite interesting. Hope some pictures come out.

I agree. If I have time I may have to drive over to ORD this weekend to see for myself. Although I'm not sure if anyone will spot this aircraft sitting out in the open  You Tube Surveillance Drone near Chicago?

Now I haven't seen any drones overhead in the western suburbs, but I have seen one or two military helicopters (Blackhawks?) around. Needless to say it is going to be quite an interesting weekend around here!

I haven't seen any drones yet, but while I was flying down by Chicagoland speedway today, there was a USCG helicopter at Lewis doing take offs and landings (which I haven't seen before, once in awhile we get Blackhawks but never the Coast Guard), and I was buzzed by two C-17s

I expect a few dignitaries, such as Harper and Cameron, will arrive on AF1 with Obama...

Quoting EASTERN747 (Reply 4):

Not a lot of the ones also attending the G8. They could fly commercial to IAD, but I can't imagine many dignitaries will suffer through the indignity of domestic first class... Anyway, as I said, I bet some end up on AF1 in a grand "aren't we all friends" gesture.

Quoting PHLapproach (Reply 8):

Yes, you misread. The G8 is meeting at Camp David on May 18 and 19. The NATO Summit is in Chicago on May 20 and 21.

Pakistan have a VIP A310 in their Air Force (J-757), it was at LHR within the last 10 days. They also have a G450 and a G4, but I would expect the A310 to be used.

Definitely, going to be a mess at ORD. The overhead signs on the Kennedy starting stating this week "expect, multiple closures and delays". If I were flying out of there this weekend, get there early or take the Blue line.
I'm looking forward to sitting on the roof of the condo and watch all the military aviation fly overhead.

It shouldn't affect either. It's intended to keep the general aviation out, theres a ten mile one around the center of the city that the Secret Service has stated if you cross you will be shot down, no questions asked, and no warning given, and there's a 30 mile one that you'll get intercepted if you break.

Today NORAD is supposedly going to be conducting exercises over the city between 0900 and 1100 local, any idea where they're bringing the jets in from?

Took liberties where there's no aircraft in the DB for the country listed. Of course, the helo at the beginning can be excused for being absent...the mistyped number for the CF A310 was too hard to edit, hence the Indian Express... others may not have the nonstop range...the Tongan 757 must've been long defunct - PM might just fly commercial. Didn't bother with the ubiquitous, but included possible planes for NATO charter.

When PM Cameron flew down here to the G-20 summit in Cannes his plane was a BAE-145. If I remember properly, it was one of the RAF's birds. Little BAE145 was sitting on the tarmac at T1 in the shadow of Air Force One and Air Force Two which were teaming together. They were all parked in the Star Alliance lot with the Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and other passenger aircrafts.

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo250/parisquilts/forums2/4c645576.jpg

It was wonderful being there that week. There was a number of wonderful airplanes from the world over. Most bizjets flew into Cannes Mandelieu. Sarkozy also flew into Mandelieu with a small bizjet and then was taken to the summit by car. The big aircrafts were all parked in Nice amidst regular passenger jets and it was no headache at all.

Estonian delegation always flys commercial. In case of ORD it is most likely SK.

Now I haven't seen any drones overhead in the western suburbs, but I have seen one or two military helicopters (Blackhawks?) around. Needless to say it is going to be quite an interesting weekend around here!

I live in Lakeview and happened to be home on Wednesday afternoon as a four or five Blackhawks accompanied by a Chinook flew at my window level. It took me by surprise and I didn't have time to get my camera.

Yesterday I got caught in some protests in both the Loop and Michigan. They shutdown stretches of Michigan from Wacker (including the bridge) up to Huron right when I was on a bus to get home. I inadvertently found myself in between two groups of protestors to my front and back, and a police line on one side. Thank god for underpasses. Interestingly, many of the protestors had covered their faces.

I haven't seen any drones yet, but while I was flying down by Chicagoland speedway today, there was a USCG helicopter at Lewis doing take offs and landings (which I haven't seen before, once in awhile we get Blackhawks but never the Coast Guard)

I have seen USCG used to enforce the outer bands of the no-fly zones that get NOTAM'd when POTUS comes to town.

Was sitting around the airport watching one of the old duffers tie down his Piper Cub when USCG arrived in a helo to ask him a few questions.

The old duffer had no idea that he had just crossed the outer edge of a no-fly zone.

quote=iFlyLOTs,reply=22]It's intended to keep the general aviation out, theres a ten mile one around the center of the city that the Secret Service has stated if you cross you will be shot down, no questions asked, and no warning given, and there's a 30 mile one that you'll get intercepted if you break.[/quote]

Interesting. Seems like the hard assets will be deployed.

They dispatch a lot of these VIPs unknown on different commercial flights at random.

I remember they dispatched the Prime Minister of Singapore on Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines FRA-SIN at the end of the G-20 summit in Nice. I was at the LH check-in counter with a friend when they were making the arrangements. They go incognito except to their secret services who go flying along with them.

I think it's a good idea in case anything happens or the official planes get targeted. I was told that other VVIPs were dispatched on other airlines mainly Air France.

I hope Miss Myrtle Rose will not deploy her collectible PiperCub and will avoid being chased out by fighter jets this time around or she might get in real trouble.

Thanks for the link. Not sure whether the picture show the actual aircraft as its not one of the RAAF 737 BBJs, which she would be expected to use. 737 is likely as well, as 'a replacement is being flown in', and the RAAF have 2 of them.

They are actually parked on the completed part of one of the unfinished new runways. The Czech Republic sent 2 air force A319s. A good spot to see the airplanes is to take Mannheim rd. To Montrose ave. then head south on Express Center Dr. and drive behind the cargo warehouses. You can look it up on google before hand.

Well that's indeed the official story... The governmental A333 from BAF doesn't have flat bad business seats (they do have decent recliners in business though) and so Mr. Di Rupo wanted to fly United (commercially, not the chartered NATO flight) to ORD.

So far the official story. The unofficial story is that there were tensions between Di Rupo and the rest of the team (prime minster with foreign affairs & defence) and thus Di Rupo decided to fly apart from the rest (his team did take the BAF flight with the departments of foreign affairs and defence though). Also contributed to this is his desire for attention and his "presidential style" according to sources. Only after word got out that he didn't fly with the rest he released a statement that he would personally pay his ticket for the commercial flight.

Edit: Link to a Dutch article with a small film made during the flight in the BAF A333, not the best chairs but quite reasonable though: http://www.standaard.be/artikel/detail.aspx?artikelid=DMF20120519_064

Yes, you misread. The G8 is meeting at Camp David on May 18 and 19. The NATO Summit is in Chicago on May 20 and 21.

Th G8 was originally supposed to be held in Chicago, but Obama moved it to Camp David some time ago because there was just too much going on in Chicago with NATO.

Thanks for that, I went out there and did see the Slovakia Tu-154 for my first ever Tu spotting ever. Just wish the fences were not as far away and/or I had a better camera. I probably could've gotten closer in a different company parking lot, but I didn't want to press my luck with the increased security all over.

The prop and the wing hide the titles (United States of America) at the top of the fuselage and it doesn't carry an airforce insignia as well as the serial showing 40324 for 94-0324 (I would have thought it wa 84-0324 because I didn't know the USAF was taking C-12s in the 90s, but I checked with Joe Baugher's site to verify and 84-0324 went to an AGM-86 ALCM missile)

Yesterday was a great day as all the diplomatic aircraft departed in the steady stream, lots of Secret Service/military types moving purposefully through the airport:

Does anyone know if Ukraine came in the Il-62

Doesn't look like they did:

A C17 can fit at MDW? I'm not doubting you I just find that incredibly impressive

C-17s are designed for relatively short field operations, they are almost like a STOL jet.

Flew out of ORD late Monday evening and for the most part, sadly all of the airplanes had left...Mistimed my commuting flights this weekend (was too dark Saturday night when I got in)...

Noted the Turkish A330 (TC-JNC) as well as the daily one, the French AF A310, the BBJ (presumed A6-DAS based on scheme) and G-VYOU, Virgin's A346 which presumably had Cameron aboard. Question for the locals, did anyone note the serials of the 2 USAF C-17s yesterday and also, were both Czech A319s still in around 730pm last night or had one departed?

Thanks in advance
JSD

Definitely one departed at approx 1730 local, here it is taxiing out (Serial 3085)
I thought these 2 aircraft looked very smart compared to the dull mostly white scheme on the others:

Thanks Eagle,

Airport shuttle didn't get to ORD until 630pm (when G-VYOU was taxiing out) so that would eliminate 3085 from being there...

Much appreciated,
JSD

Just an observation, and not to start an A vs B diatribe...but it seems to me that the vast majority of the Heads of State traveled on Airbus frames.

The vast majority of NATO lies in Europe, my guess would be more of an "EU pride" type deal

I hate it when people point out the obvious (which I obviously missed!)

"EU made" more than "EU pride" I would think. Airbus has plants and major suppliers located in various European countries. If they had the funds in their budget for an aircraft that size, would South Carolina, Texas or Kansas even consider for a nanosecond buying an ACJ instead of a BBJ? It would be a deadly political move.

MDW is nothing for a C-17 - quite luxurious compared to some places...!!

Does anyone know if Ukraine came in the Il-62 and if any of the Russian government have arrived either? I stayed until 9PM on Saturday and caught many arrivals but I assume many arrived after it got dark. Here's what I got yesterday (Saturday) May 19th:

Very nice shots! I thought that I heard that the Russian delegation was staying in Russia to work on the newly elected government, or was that just Putin?

Ironic that they were even invited to the NATO summit...
