After a three year 'delay', the City of Chicago has approved the development of the new Northeast Cargo Center at ORD. In 2009, the City announced that it had chosen Aeroterm, LLC to develop the land formally occupied by the Illinois Air National Guard. But the downturn in the economy had put the project on hold, most likely due to of lack of available financing and a downturn in the air cargo industry.

I always wondered what the City was going to do with the land in that area. IIRC, they tore down most of the old military buildings in the late 90's/ early 00's.

Politics aside, this looks like a good thing for Chicago in the long term. The project seems to essentially double the cargo capacity at ORD. While the air cargo industry may still be in a downturn, it will eventually pick up and Chicago will be in a position to handle quite a bit more capacity.

And that sound you just heard was the last nail being driven into the coffin containing the hope some had for a new Peotone airport. And the second sound you just heard is the first nail in the coffin containing the hopes of RFD officials to bring in more cargo operators to their facility.

That is great news, great use of land at an existing airport! Congrats to ORD, Aeroterm, Chicagoland and Rahmbo!

I've always thought that there are more than enough airports in the Chicago area that there shouldn't have even been talk of Peotone

I thought that was UPS and/or FedEx and/or ANA and that the replacement for those facilites were already well under construction???

Looking at Google Maps it looks like FedEx was already relocated.

Also, interesting to see the progress of moving Irving Park Road and the RR Tracks...the RR tracks look pretty far along, bridges are built and tracks are partly laid, that could have taken winter 2011/12?

Interesting how they expect to have phase 1 of the cargo center done next year. Pretty quick construction.

Also here are a couple renders of the south airfield atc tower. It looks taller in the renders than it really is, it's 219 feet, smaller than the other 2 towers at O'Hare. Good looking tower though no doubt.

Except most of them weren't all that old..........Mayor "Calamity" Jane Byrne had the same idea to use that land for an international terminal except the feds had just spent millions on new buildings in that location for the ANG and AFRES. That was in the late 70s. Don't know how much usage they got from those buildings, because the ANG and AFRES got caught up in one of the BRAC reductions and were either moved or disbanded. I know my AFRES unit was able to use their building for a short time in the early 80s after they moved from those old, black alert hangars just south of the base proper.


As far as the Southern facility, it really isn't all that old, either. Most of the occupants moved in there when construction started on T5. DL just recently moved there from their location on Bessie Coleman Drive after the merger with NW.

Yes, FedEx's new facility is up and running. I'm not sure when the United cargo building will be demolished, but it will be gone and 10R/28L (or 10C/28C if the southernmost runway is eventually built) will be built over it. As far as the old Northwest Cargo building and the UPS buildings, I'm not sure if they're staying or going. As they're somewhat in line with the new FedEx facility, I guess they may be staying?? Does anyone have an updated diagram of the final configuration of the southern cargo facility?

Back in the mid-90's I was told there were at least two AF fighters (maybe F-16's?) inside a mystery hanger ready to fly at any time if needed. Any truth or variation of truth to that?

As far at the new Northeast Cargo facilities, its interesting to note that most of the area being developed once housed the 2 million square foot Douglas Aircraft Co.'s Chicago Aircraft Assembly Plant where they built the C-54 Skymaster for WWII. Here's a quick read for anyone interested:

That is currently used by the ORD City Operations. Due to the location it was cheaper to maintain the tower then the have it demoloshed.

There was a North cargo ramp, and the concrete was in terrible condition. Now half that ramp will be removed(is removed) for the new runway. and the other half rebuilt for the GA/Signature Ramp. No doubt that this new North cargo ramp will be great for ORD, as long as it is used.

Never heard about that, but I had transferred to SHV by then. The ANG unit was KC-135s and my AFRES unit was C-130s, when I was there. The two, old alert hangars I mentioned were occupied by the AFRES Civil Engineers (IIRC) and my own unit, the 928th Mobile Aerial Port. Our neighbor was the old "Naked City" Comet that was parked there.

Is it just me, or is the department of Aviation building included in the project? At least that is what it appears on page2. Is parking lot G disappearing as a result of the construction?

Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

10R/28L, the southernmost runway, will theoretically be built south of the south cargo area. Hence the relocation of the Union Pacific train tracks and the future relocation of Irving Park Rd. If you google earth the airport, its pretty clear that is what they're planning. But IIRC, 10R/28L has not been given the go ahead to be built yet. Same with 9C/27C. I'm not even sure that 14R/32L or 14L/32R are going to be decommissioned. I know that their removal was in the original development plans, but a lot has changed in the last few years. Please correct me if I'm wrong, though.

The agreement that the city/DoT/UA/AA worked out is that 9C-27C would be put on hold while the remainder of the southern runways will go forward to be built. I don't recall seeing anything about completing the extension of 9R-27L or the decommissioning of the 14-32 parallels. I'd imagine that once 10R-28L is complete they will probably close 14R-32L.

It's staying, it'll be facing the new runway.
