I like the increased cabin downstairs of Premium Economy, it makes it more private with dedicated toilet etc.
Although I understand the reasons for doing it, I don't like the Upper Deck being split between Premium & Economy. I think it loses the uniqueness of being on the Upper Deck of the 744's.
Also as crew the service will be very mixed now on the Upper Deck, I imagine they will split the service, on the LGW fleet of 744's there are normally 2 junior crew upstairs in Premium - so I would imagine one will do Premium & one will do economy.
I used to love working upstairs, you could really provide a lovely service for Premium passengers and the unique cabin upstairs made it special for passengers.

Forgive my ignorance, but why the different configurations on the 747-400 (apart from the LGW models). Are they route-specific, or are they upgrading to a newer cabin and some haven't been done yet?

Virgin are in the middle of re-fitting all their LGW / MAN / GLA Leisure Fleet of 744's, so that's why so many different config's at the moment. Once completed in October 2012, there will be only 2 different config's LHR & LGW.
The reason for all the different config's at the moment, is that to start with we had LGW & LHR config, then VS converted some LHR 744's to become LGW config but the actual aicraft layout was different (i.e. galley's & toilets etc..), so the converted birds needed different seat maps.

Can you explain it to me? I'm not sure I get it. Thx!
When they made the Premium cabin downstairs larger, they lost a number of Economy seats downstairs - the cost of losing these seats was too great - so they replaced them upstairs.

Certainly agreed, especially when the cabin was half empty (or half full?!). Was even addressed by name towards the end of the flight. Very different to when i was on a flight home from BGI in economy when the crew seemed to be nursing hangovers!!

Thanks for the information. I've flown VS a few times and really enjoyed the flights. Do you know if they're coming back to ORD this summer?
