I was half watching an episode of CHiPs after work when I noticed the words "Dallas/Ft Worth" on a sign. That caught my eye since I live in the Metroplex and this sign was in SoCal circa 1978! I have attached a crude picture from my TV screen. The sign says "Fly DELTA TriStars to Dallas/Ft Worth." I find it interesting that the L1011 was specifically mentioned and that Delta must have been a player back then on the DFW to SoCal market! I hope you guys enjoy!

Didn't Delta fly their 747's from DAL-LAX? They were always a player on that route.

Delta added a second story on their concourse at Love field so the 747's and L-1011 can use Jetways.

The L-1011 Tristar was for a long time Delta's flagship aircraft, like the DC-10 was for American. In the 70s the L-1011 was new and it was considered as one of the greatest aircraft in civil aviation, especially with its good safety record. So it was no surprise to me that Delta would mention the word "Tristar "on its advertisements.
The CHiPs episodes were filmed in Los Angeles, so the Delta ad that you saw was to fly with them LAX-DFW on the L-1011.

When Delta acquired their 747's they were used on the ATL-DAL-LAX route. At the time (this is when DL was mainly a southern carrier specializing in transporting people from the north to the south) this was their flagship route. But the original 747's didn't stay too long due to being fuel hogs. But it was very prestigious for an airline to have the 747 at the time. They later added the L1011 on that route.

In fact one time I flew a Beech Bonanza into DAL and was sandwiched between a AA DC-10 and a DL 747! I had to fly final approach at near cruise speed!

I remember when the hourly weather sequence reports changed from DAL to DFW. I was planning a cross country at the time.
It was in January 1974.

They stayed in the fleet about 7 years. The problem was that there were no real routes on the system where they fit. If they had been kept another couple of years, they probably could have been used on the ATL-LGW route. The only routes where they fit, at the time, was the PanAm interchange to LHR.

My one enviable airline flight was on a Delta 747 from Atlanta to Dallas to LA. Dad liked to do a big vacation every other year with some business associates, and this time he took me and granddad too. Since we were a group of six flying first class we got the penthouse suite, which was the port side of the upper deck. I remember the breakfast being particularly good, and they served us on each leg. As a skinny thirteen year old I'd never needed to watch my calorie intake.

That was before DFW opened, and I remember seeing it just after takeoff; the pilot said it was going to be the biggest airport in the world.

Was the upper deck on DL's 747 divided in two?
I remember that they had a private room in the upper deck sectioned off from the rest of the area. For the price of eight first class tickets you could book the room for your party. All that was in there were two large seats and a sofa along the wall with a couple of windows. The division separated the upper deck into a left side and a right side. The private room was on the left side as you walked off the spiral staircase.

I got lucky once when I was a kid, we were non-revs to PBI out of ORD and the flight was full so we got put on the DL 747 to MIA, in First! Don't remember much about the flight itself just Mom complaining that we had to rent a car at MIA to drive to PBI and she hated driving in strange cities. We had to drop off the car at PBI on our way back and made the DL 727 back to ORD. At least I made it on an original DL 747.

Yes, it was and you've got the details correct, too.

The only time I got to fly on a DL747 when I worked at ORD was when a bunch of us from air freight went down to ATL to play a softball game with another bunch of DL employees. We went down on a DC-8 and came back on the 747 or vice versa.......can't remember, now.

The 747 was also used ATL-DAL-SFO as flight 19, and returned nonstop to ATL as flight 46. I remember a takeoff from Love Field on the shorter of the two parallels, with no pavement to spare, full pax. IIRC, the configuration was 70F/300Y.

Braniff also operated their 747 DAL-HNL for several years prior to DFW opening. And as far as the sign being L-1011 specific, National also was big on mentioning both the DC-10 and 747 in much of their news advertising in the New York area re their Florida flights, Miami in particular for the 747.

Yes, they did indeed. I was coming home on R&R from my McNamara Fellowship with the US Army in Viet Nam in 1972 and flew that route. It was quite a sight to behold in that, as I recall, it was painted orange.

And if my memory serves me right, I connected with a BAC1-11 that went to TUL and then to LIT.

DL operated Tri-Stars on many domestic routes that were not that long. I used to fly them TPA-ATL and recall once on take-off we had an asymmetric either flap or slat issue and had to return to TPA.

Also, rode one from ATL-LGW.

This is honestly what airlines and OEMs thought: the 747 and friends were a stopgap to be turned into cargo craft once SST's became commonplace.

IIRC, when we got the "stopgap" DC-10s in about '74, we were operating them ORD-MEM-ATL and the same when the Tristars came on board a year or two later. Those were the reasons that DL got rid of the L-100, all cargo fleet, because it was thought that the widebodies could be a good replacement.
