Is Qantas Likely To Go For 737NG Or A320?

Qantas's 737 classics seem to be approaching the point of retirement. For their replacements, are they more likely to go for the 737NG or the A320?

The 737NG, no doubt about it. Qantas has always been a Boeing-dominate airline. Qantas is the oldest airline, has been with Boeing planes, and has never crashed. Boeing really has earned themselves a very good reputation with Qantas.

I think Qantas would've ordered the 777 if Airbus hadn't thrown those A330s in the A380s deal, because it could have commonality with the 747 fleet.

Tupelov, I think either series has about an equal chance of getting into the Qantas fleet, but the 737s currently in the fleet are not that old.

Both have an equal chance, in my opinion. Airbus won last time around, so that might give them an edge, with CCQ andeverything, but Boeing will be very eager to turn the tide in their favor again. Both are excellent planes, so it'll come down to who makes the 'offer they can't refuse'.

Continental, Qantas is not the world's oldest airline. That title goes to KLM. I believe Avianca is nr. 2.

Qantas is actually known to be studying the replacement for these aircraft, even though they are still pretty young. It's been a while since I've heard anything about that, but around the time the A330/A380/744ER order was announced it was widely reported by the media that the 737 replacement would be the next step.

It will hinge on price and whether QF requires an A321/739 sized aircraft. If they do, then Airbus will win,as the 321 outpoints the 739. The 319/320 v 73G/738 is a very close competition. I really think Boeing needs to launch the 739X with around 20 more seats to become more competitive with the 321.
This decision will be made next year. An Airbus decision would enforce earlier retirement of the 737 classic fleet due to the high expenses of operating both types. This is the factor most in Boeing's favour- the 737NGs could be slotted in more gradually as it would be much easier for QF to operate 737 classics and NGs side-by-side.
If I had to guess, and it is only a guess, I would go for the A32X family to be selected by QF.

I emailed Qantas before, they said replacements for the B737s will be placed around in 2002-2003.

Personally I believe they will go for the B737NGs as someone said above, to give Boeing the edge.

I was going to say the same. A Boeing 757 alongside 737NGs might be a good option for QF. Indeed 757s Trans-tasman, to Bali etc seems a perfect alternative to current planes used on the route as well as for more important domestic routes.

This will be another A vs B battle; both manufacturers really want this order. Boeing probably has the edge, but one must also take into account what Ansett does about its A320/733 replacement program. It may sound silly, but if Ansett goes with Boeing, Qantas may favor Airbus just to be different. (or Vice-Verse). There is a marketing issue involved. We shall see. QF will likey wait until it gets a little experience with the A330s before it makes a decision.

If I remember correctly, QF was not very happy with the A300s it inherited from TAA back when those airlines merged in the early 90s. Of course, that is ancient history and Airbus, and its support network, have come a very, very long way since then; however, I think that QF will wait and see before it orders a 737 replacement.

The problem is that you never seem to let a chance go by to start a war. Agreed, you probably don't mean it to become a war, but usually it does.

I'm also immediately going to suggest this post to be deleted, as I only want Boeing 747-400 to read it, and don't wish to start another war.

There is nothing wrong with the two posts I made! I kindly corrected Dalecary on his post, and I said nothin anti-airbus! So how do you come to the conclusion that I don't like Airbus? I like both comapnies, and I try to be as realistic about the industry as I can. It's YOU who just started the fight between us!

And so on... You get the point. (Oh no that's right, you don't)

You know what point I get? That you're a goddamn fool, and that you are the one starting the war!

where did I say that Airbus would definitely win this order. I didn't. Sorry, but the 321 can carry 20-30 more pax than the 739 with about the same trip costs. It has a distinct advantage. Unless Boeing can increase 739 capacity with a higher MTOW 739X, you will find that the 321 will win more often than not when pitted against it. The 752 is not an option. They will order from a common family and not add another type. I see you basically know nothing about fleet planning .

QF like both but the 737NG will win. QF has already contracted to maintain the RAAF's Wedgetail AWACS 737s and the RAAF VIP BBJs. Both of these types are based on the NG meaning QF are already investing in the infrastructure associated with the type.

I think the A321 may be best-suited for QF's needs, provided they fly the higher-MTOW versions that US flies on their transcon flights and QF gets ETOPS 180 certification on flying this plane, which will allow flights to Hobart in Tasmania on from SYD and MEL.

ETOPS is not required for Tasmanian routes. Bass Strait isn't that big.

QF do not fly to HBA. These has now been transferred to QantasLink who service the route with 717s. AN A321 would be too big for HBA which has only ever been serviced by 737s and A320s before the 717s and CRJs took over.
