Spotting At Jfk?

my friend and i are plannig a trip to JFK later this year maybe during X-mas vacation (being that we are 17) soon to be 18. and we were wondering if there are any good places to watch planes and or take photos? also whats sercurity like? is there any way we could go into the terminal just to look at some planes? Oh yeah and one more thing is there any chance we could visit the tower if we called ahead of time? thanks!
