FlyBe have announced a new code-sharing arrangement with KLM effective today. KLM flight numbers now appear on three daily roundtrips between Southampton (SOU) and AMS and one daily roundtrip between Inverness (INV) and AMS.

This comes hot on the heels of BE commencing feeder service for SN Brussels at BRU. FlyBe is clearly working hard to diversify its revenue streams.

I can't help wondering what this means for KLM Cityhopper. KLM already serve more than a dozen regional UK airports, although neither INV nor SOU. While it's complimenting the existing KLM network, I can't help wondering whether KLM might use this as an opportunity to reconsider which other regional UK airports might be better served by Cityhopper or FlyBe code-shares.

Thoughts?

KLM and Flybe unite to increase UK routes to Amsterdam and beyond
29 May 2012

Starting on 30th May 2012, KLM and Flybe, Europe's largest regional airline, will implement a code-share agreement on two routes, namely between Amsterdam and Southampton and Amsterdam and Inverness.

Through this new partnership, KLM will be offering its customers three daily flights on the Southampton – Amsterdam route and one daily flight on the Inverness – Amsterdam route. The agreement provides passengers from Southampton and Inverness easy connections with the rest of the world via the award-winning Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Flybe will benefit from incremental traffic generated by KLM sales.

I dont see any reason for KLM to change. INV and SOU where not destinations where the KLM cityhopper fleet could make a profit. Obviously the smaller planes and lower cost structure of FlyBe changes everything.

I dont even think the F70/100 could use the small SOU runway, correct me when im wrong.

Anyway, 2 new destinations for KLM, congrats!

Next trip : DUB-AUH-CGK-DPS-KUL-AUH-CDG-ORK :-)

SOU can handle up to a 757 so runway length isn't the issue. This is great because we get many passengers connecting onto KL services mostly to some German and Scandinavian cities but of course these were unprotected as there was no agreement. Now there is I can see a great increase in connections depending how well its promoted.
