Hi A.net
LH's first B748-I left FRA on it's Inaugural flight to IAD and is airborne since almost a hour. Wish them all a good and safe flight and hope to get some images soon and to the spotters in IAD that should arrive at 12-45 LT.
Can be seen on Flightradar that will soon cross the Channel and then over England in couple of min's.
Madame Concorde is on Board!!
Good luck and safe journey D-ABYA!!! fly 748-I fly

D-ABYA has just gone past my house (NW of LHR) at FL340 routing LAM-DIKAS.
Interestingly, OO-SFW operating the inaugural SN501 (BRU-JFK) is alongside it on a parallel track at FL380
05:15 arrival at FRA? Wow, that's early. Guess I won't be dragging my ass out of bed in the middle of the night on the off-chance of seeing it fly over SE England!

Quoting Burkhard (Reply 13): I really hope the use B748 fot the B747-8F and 74H for the B748I - much easier to interpret the data...
Flightaware should use the ICAO codes (as should the flightplan, which is where the Flightaware code should come from) and this is "B748" for both the pax and freighter versions.

The aircraft is due to operate the LH419 service this evening departing IAD at 1755 local and arriving FRA at 0805 local.
The LH418 and LH417 flights are not operating today.

With Lufthansa? It's not that far fetched to suggest they planned it, but considering the heavy traffic over the NE USA, that would be a very tough nut to crack indeed. More power to their elbow if they managed to pull it off, hope they don't forget to ship a couple bottles of niceness to the lads and ladies working as talking traffic lights

For some reason, it appears that FlightAware hasn't caught up with the new service. The 748 is scheduled to operate the IAD-FRA route indefinitely. FlightAware thought that an A333 was operating LH416 until it actually took off this morning, so I wouldn't trust it as a source, at least not right now.

Also, I was fortunate enough to be on the tarmac today as a guest of Lufthansa to watch the arrival and subsequent water cannon salute. Here is a quick gallery from the landing and ceremonies (I'll be posting more photos on my Flickr site over the weekend).

To AA94.
Great pictures, thanks for sharing! The LH cabin crew usually look very classy and today is no exception.
Hopefully other airlines will buy the 748i. You have to be impressed that the original design and engineering were so good that 4 decades later, the plane and derivatives are still flying.

That was the flight one day before, a B747-400 that diverted to St.John's due to a medical emergency.
From Transport Canada daily occurrence reports site:
DLH419, a Boeing 747-400 enroute from Washington (KIAD) to Frankfurt (EDDF) declared a medical emergency at 80 NM East of 48 North 050 West. DLH419 was still on radar when the pilot requested and was cleared direct to St. John’s (CYYT). The aircraft landed without incident at 0137Z.

I am so terribly spaced out and just resurfacing after a very worthwile but exhausting trip. So much has happened during the trip and I was treated to a superb magnificent unexpected surprise after I landed in Frankfurt and the 748i event was all done wth!
Quoting mffoda (Reply 39): I wonder how may did not deplane? and were there for the first flight too and from...
All passengers. My time on the ground was well spent. I went to the IAD NASM to pay my hommage to Space Shuttle Discovery and what a thrilling exhibition that is!!! Just her... she is worth the trip alone!! Thank you NASM You did a fabulous job!!!! Space Shuttle Discovery is in the best possible hands and in the best possible place!!!! I know you will cherish and treasure her... and so will we all.
I gave my love to Concorde FA my Rio de Janeiro Concorde, same place as above just down the next hall. Concorde... the top best passenger aircraft to have existed in this world.... in every way!!!!
Quoting tozbek (Reply 54): I was on the flight. Here you are some videos taken during the flight:
I did not get a chance to meet you or did I maybe under a different name? Are you "Wandering Aramean" from Flyertalk?
There was also a really nice boy who came all the way from Beijing for the inaugural. He said he is also on the Anet forum and he was taking lots of pictures. I hope we will hear from him on this thread. He is wonderful!
Quoting columba (Reply 59): Spiegel Online has a trip report as well (sadly in German), nice is that the even CEO of LH is saying that the 747-8I is much better looking then the A380
That is all relative.
LH CEO Frantz (sp?) wants to defend his latest acquisition - it makes good sense!
Concorde is still the top best in looks and everything else.
There's got to be something for every taste, right?
Quoting AA94 (Reply 60): Everyone deplaned due to customs and also because LH hosted media tours of the aircraft with their VIP guests and press while on the ground.
I could have gone to that but I had better things to do while I was on the ground.
Tornados were around IAD, the weather was more than uncertain, I had a schedule and lots to do so I wanted to make sure I could get it all done.... and I did.
Quoting AA94 (Reply 63): Here's a full gallery from the 747-8 press event yesterday, including some onboard photos.
I came back with heaps of pictures and other materials... I mean lots, left and right and upside down, upstairs and downstairs, front and back, events on board, CEOs and VIPs, VVIPs, and even the flight deck with the two nice captains from the return flight.
Give me time. I want to do a good trip report and try not to miss out on anything. I know many will be waiting here on Anet and outside too so please bear with me. I've got F1 folks still waiting too... but I will try my best not to be too long. Good TRs are a lot of work and I have got a lot to say!

At first the 748i upper deck seemed too big, but it has grown on me and the engines give it a meaner look too compared to the 744. What an eye pleasing aircraft it is, if looks were the most important reason to buy an aircraft it would win hands down
Amazing machine, there is no one like it and probably never will be either.
Imagine what it would have done with even more hands on, Al-Li, new cfrp wings and more modern systems.
LH made a bold move and I think they made the right one, this one will be popular as it is quite unique. If they get a further 3-4000 lb off its weight and a PIP it will be very efficient, a real work horse for cargo and passengers. I hope Swiss goes for them too Classy flights in the LH group.

At the time we were to leave back to Frankfurt with LH419 the ramp was closed due to bad weather and tornado warnings. We were put in a parking position until they were given the green light to leave and circled around the bad weather. We landed at Frankfurt about 8.00 in the morning.

I only wish those of us on Anet travelling on these first time revolutionary totally new aircraft type inaugural flights (thinking of the A380 and B-787 Dreamliner) could be approved by the Anet chief admin as official Anet reporters so we could get access to some of the freebies and top events that other less audience frequented website reporters are getting.
It would give our reports another dimension with much more content than what we get by having to fight our way for credibility.
