AF/KL have today announced that they will introduce WIFI on board two B773 planes (one each) for a pilot of one year in 2013. Passengers will benefit from in-flight data connection and a dedicated in-flight website. Further introduction into the entire will be decided when the results of this pilot and customer feedback are in.

Personally, I am curious to see whether this will one day also find its way into the short haul fleet.

Strikes me as being overly cautious. A full years trial when surely they know the experience of other airlines? Soemtimes you just wish management would make a deicion and go for it!

I bet it costs a lot to install, and the GSM gear is probably pretty heavy - not a small decision. Depends a lot on their business travelers as well. Not every airline has the same premium demographic.

What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Agreed.
TK started doing this a while ago and will be on 12 x 77Ws and 10 x A333s.
TK also has liveTV (I think only a handful of channels now) but even over the Atlantic.
Free wi-fi and live soccer was awesome on my IST-JFK flight last month.

Wifi on a 777 in which you can barely open a laptop in the Y sardine can sounds like a foolish decision. Bonne chance AF!

Note: there IS sarcasm in this post.

When I doubt... go running!

I think pay-for wifi is a good money maker for the airlines on long haul flight. Not everyone likes to watch movies all the time, and a lot of folks have smart phones and tablets with them.

I paid 6 bucks for about 30 mins worth of internet on an Emirates 380 last month and I gotta say it was pretty fun. Nice to check my emails and Facebook!

I like British Airways! I'm not sure why, but I do! ;-)

Just to clarify, is this trial using satellite network or GSM network? As this has been deployed on 777s is this satellite as the aircraft will be deployed on international missions?

I understand that the system is fairly lightweight. Just requires a randome receiver and broadcast equipment in the airframe.

"AF/KL Announce Wifi Pilot On 2 B773 Planes"

...a wifi pilot? I'd rather a real pilot myself...
