In mid-April, Bloomberg reported that Qatar Airways planned to start passenger flights from Doha to Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, and Chicago with the Boeing 787. After much fanfare, nearly two months after the announcement was made we have yet to hear about any planned start dates for the service. Are start dates for the services planned yet?

Qatar Airways Ltd. plans to start flights to Atlanta, Chicago, Boston and Detroit within the next year, doubling its U.S. network, as the carrier begins receiving Boeing Co. (BA) 787 Dreamliners.

None of these destinations were announced with any specific time frames or dates in mind; until that comes to fruition, it's best to simply categorize the announcement as talk, which seems to be a typical pattern of behavior for many of the Persian/Middle Eastern carriers, a la TK style.

Another data point to prove this came a few weeks later, when Qatar announced major expansion plans at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, although none of the destinations listed were consistent with those mentioned in the bloomberg article, let alone in the US/on 787 aircraft

next flights: msp-phx-slc, msp-mdw, ord-sju, sju-dfw-ord, msp-dfw, dfw-phl, phl-msp, jfk-icn, icn-hkg-bkk-cdg

Interestingly, TK also had "plans" to serve Atlanta but that never came to fruition either.

Interesting destination choice for QR; do they codeshare with DL or UA?

This discussion has popped up a few too many times. QR did not announce anything. They're looking at several cities, but until it can be booked on their website, don't take anything seriously. I've heard that EK and TK are also looking at BOS, but not all three will serve it, as cool as that would be.

UA and QR recently ended their codeshare and frequent flyer agreements.

this will have impact on QR's feed in IAD and IAH as essentially, ones option's are to issue two separate tickets or book United's end-on end fare (essentially full fare)along with any of QR's fares to issue as one ticket. so at least they have. for now, maintained their standard interline bag/ticket agreement but any compettive pricing edge is lost! In Houston they probably depend mostly on local orignating traffic, but not sure about DC as UA now serves market with their own metal!

I have never found that to be the case, at least from a customer perspective. You can still fly on a single ticket, just on different alliances, and I have never found that to be any more expensive. In fact some of the cheapest fares I have gotten have been on trips where each of the segments was operated by a different alliance carrier.

you might have misunderstood me...UA has inhibited their lowest fares from being be combinable for single ticketing with any of QR's fares other than their highest full fare...United has intentionally filed their fares this way to essentially cut off feed other than those who are willing to pay a premium or willing to travel on two tickets (always risky)

this will go into effect Jul 1st

BOS could be fed via their interline with B6. Same could be said for EK or TK. Who pulls the trigger first is anyone's guess.

I just flew BOS-IAD-DOH-DAC ... the BOS-IAD sectors were QR code-shared.

I see, I must be one of the few lucky ones then.

How is this going to benefit UA? Will QR find other partners through interline? Or UA knows that IAD and IAH flights will have to depend on UA to disburse the passengers to their origins/destinations?

IAD-DOH were packed to the rims both ways even in this economy. Almost feels like a new carrier (EK or EY) won't have any problem filling up. Definitely have more growth potential in the USA. Here are my hunches:

EK - after IAD starts ... there are not many left other than the big three (ORD/ATL/MIA). I say MIA.
QR - I think ORD is most likely with the UA hub. BOS may be possible ONLY after the 787s are in.
EY - always thought they would be the one to start DFW. but now EK has taken that and also preempted their IAD move. I am not sure if EY is being guided by the right set of minds.
TK - DTW makes most sense. MIA is rumored a lot, but I have my doubts (ATL too). BOS ... maybe. This is a rather short flight for TK (easily doable with the A330s) ... and the B6 feed is there.
