From Where Is DL Getting These Planes?

I have been wondering ever since the LGA hub announcement but have been continuously forgetting to ask: where is DL getting enough planes to add 150+ flights out of LGA? I know they decreased operations at DCA, and yes some of the planes probably came from there, but what about the rest? They added a lot of mainline flying from LGA. And the recently announced new JFK-TPA frequency plus the 5th LGA-TPA and the rest.... It all comes down to this, where are they getting these airplanes from? Is it profitable to have that much slack in the fleet?

Take a look at what's happened at MEM and CVG over the past couple of years. There's your answer.

We have also been and are still adding MD90's to the fleet. They may not be doing those routes but they free up other mainline aircraft for this flying.

They have also cut back JFK a bit in terms of capacity.

There is also some slack in the fleets.. and longer days flying can add flights here and there with a fleet as large as Delta's.

and all of us here in CVG are waiting patiently for the LGA hub to bust in the profits department so the flights will return back here

The vast majority was 50 seater and 2-class RJs that came from:
1) DCA - reduction for slots traded to US
2) JFK - transition of some regional flying from JFK to LGA
3) MEM & CVG - some ongoing reductions in regional flying in the secondary hubs
4) Increased utilization of existing aircraft

Well, it has been quote the opposite. DL is extremely happy with the initial success at LGA with the first wave of new flights. Margins are up, corporate share in NYC is growing, and for the most part they've exceeded their initial expectations.

Missing one big piece. GoJet. Those "-CA" registered CR7s came from OO/EV and moved from ATL/CVG/SLC to LGA/DTW.

And as mentioned the 50 seater lift came from a HUGE amount of slack in the RP 145 fleet.

Not to get too off topic, but why are there no MD-90s flying in and out of LGA on a regular basis?

I believe DL will begin to use E70/75's on LGA-BOS shuttle flights so those A319's will be deployed on a few mainline flts out of LGA.

They are mostly being used on MSP flights, which frees up other aircraft to fly the LGA flights.

(wont get what you want anyways, but even without LGA, CVG isn't needed with DTW right there)

We were once watching the weather channel banking on a huge crippling blizzard to destroy DTW...instead, it hit CVG

With the order of the 717s, will a lot of them go to LGA or to ATL? (aren't they based at ATL anyway?)

Actually, the majority of the MD-90 departures are out of ATL. But yes, MSP is an M90 base.

I think the majority will operate out of ATL and DTW, with lesser numbers at MSP and LGA.

Over 90% of the new flights out of LGA are operated by Delta Connection carriers. That's how Delta's doing it.

Anyone with half a brain that looks at the list of new cities will know that most to of the flying does not warrant mainline a/c.

Disclaimer but the information below is a copy and paste from one of my own posts made about 3 months ago. Info will be slightly off but for the purpose of this reply it should do. All, please correct any information as you see fit (like stuff that now only operate out of JFK) upgrade/downgrade in frequencies/equipment, etc. Because I simply wanted to post the cities and don't have time to check and fix the schedule/ a/c.

I know i'm digging up a very dead horse here but this same reply was made to you 3 months ago along with

-In my post, I said I supported DL metal to CLT, BUF, IAH, PIT and DFW. I was also being realistic by saying at the most we will see a MIX of mainline and RJs (one well timed mainline flight to complement the large RJs). However, I doubt we will ever see it on the likes of PIT and IAH for varying reasons. For one, I would expect the capacity to move to MSP first which is an actual transfer hub over LGA which will focus primarily on O/D from either side of the respective route.

-BTW, are we even looking at the other hubs as a comparison??? RIC sees all CR2s from DTW. CLT is a mix of 175s and Buses from MSP. DTW-BUF is all CR2s and 1 CR9 in the summer with MSP getting a single CR9. IAH, DFW and PIT is 175/CR9 country from both MSP and DTW.

Before we start talking about dumping mainline a/c into the likes of LGA, we need to look at the non-ATL stuff and see how DL handles the traffic. The fleet is not THAT big to support the dream mainline expansion out of LaGuardia when they don't even have the a/c for the other true hubs..

We are already seeing the mainline stuff to the suspected candidates like RDU (scheduled but not flying yet) and some other city someone else mentioned maybe a week ago. Is it BUF maybe?

25 avi8 : I know most flights are CRJ/ERJ/EMB 170/75, but to add 150 + flights in the course of 3 months, they have to pull those aircraft from somewhere. Even
26 FlyASAGuy2005 : Your question was answered. There were no stored large RJs to fund the flying. Everything was in the air already. Trips are now a bit more "optimized
27 avi8 : Now that answers my question. Thank you very much, i appreciate your answer. Y'all have a good day!
28 FlyASAGuy2005 : NP. Math is not my strongest suite but just from what I posted, that's 98 additional departures plus other additions I haven't included such as SRQ/B
