QR just announced thrice weekly services to Mozambique via Johanesburg operated by the flagship Boeing 777 from October. Isn't it a huge detour? http://m.arabianbusiness.com/qatar-a...ium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed

Interesting! Thanks.

Nope. 270mi as the crow flies.

Will the routing be DOH-JNB-MPM-DOH or DOH-JNB-MPM-JNB-DOH?

Not really ... GC Map shows the detour is just 270 miles.
QR DOH-JNB-MPM

These are likely to be the three terminator services to JNB that will be extended to MPM. The aircraft sits in JNB for 6 hours right now. The other 4 JNB services already extend to CPT. This move is more a sign that QR is unable to fill the JNB service as a terminator than anything else.

I don´t see the logic of this.... operating a B777 on such a short route will be terribly expensive and I don´t think that it will last long.... Codesharing it´s a more logical option.

What about a direct flight from Doha to Nanpula then Maputo with an A319, or even sending an A330 to DOH-DAR-MPM. the morning flight DOH-NBO-DAR I think I heard that it will change to DOH-NBO-JRO, so why no upgrading DAR, that QR planes are always full.

Does MPM command the international traffic/cargo to justify this flight, even as a tag on from JNB? Or are QR's JNB flights suffering so much that they are willing try any tag within the geographic area in an effort to boost loads?

TP used to tag-on two of its JNB flights to MPM (A343).

Mozambique economy is booming right now (as Angola's, both are the objects of numerous positive news reports here in the European media).
The flow of Portuguese migrants keeps growing right now (incredible, but European crisis permitting..!!) . So I think it's rather odd to open that route without LIS connection. Just my opinion.

I assume they rather target the Asia-Mozambique traffic.

I assume they picked Mozambique because they can't fill the JNB terminator and LUN, HRE and DUR were already taken by EK, which left them with WDH, GBE and MPM to choose from.

Interestingly enough, I recently read an article from the Namibia Times that said that while EK are not looking to fly into WDH per se, they are looking to expand their code share agreements with Air Namibia:

http://allafrica.com/stories/201206191183.html

Perhaps QR saw this and decided to avoid WDH? Am I wrong to say that WDH is probably a more viable destination than MPM for QR? With WDH QR could have at least tapped into FRA for connections...
