I chanced upon an old thread I started years ago:

SQ Star Alliance C/S (by Coal Aug 19 2006 in Civil Aviation)

So the story back then was that SQ was better than everyone else in Star and could get away with a modified Star Alliance scheme.

What changed that made them paint a 77W in something closer to the full Star theme?

Cheers
Coal

I thought it was because they were superstitious with special liveries due to the SQ006 tragedy which happened to be on the tropical megatop (which was a great livery). I always though it was conjecture, but I do think it is mildly absurd that they don't do the Star Alliance scheme like everyone else, even though the modified scheme is already super close.

These days, I sometimes don't get the decisions that SQ as a company makes. Ever since they bungled their new website my opinion of them as an airline has changed.

On a seperate note, anyone remember the first Star Alliance liveries where they painted parts of the fuselage in sections like the liveries of all members (when it was like 6 or 7 members)? That was cool. I would love to see them do that today! It would be cool but it would probably look pretty ugly now that they have almost 20 members!!!

Even though SQ is one of the founders of the *Alliance I believe SQ like to differentiate from the other members as a stand alone very similar to CX and their relationship with QF as an example operating 4 x daily HKG-SYD...

Actually SQ wasn't a founder. They joined in April 2000, a month after Austrian, as the 11th member.

SIA's initial reluctance to paint an aircraft in the Star Alliance livery had absolutely nothing to do with the crash of SQ006. One can only wonder where this urban myth came from.

It is true that SIA was not terribly fond of the black tail that Star Alliance wanted ... neither was it exactly doing a lion dance about the white-tail option.

In the end, it managed to extract somewhat reluctant blessings from the alliance for its own version of the Star Alliance livery.

One can probably now surmise that SIA wanted its Star Alliance liveried aircraft to conform to the alliance's guidelines and was prepared to set aside its dislike for the white tail. As such, 9V-SWI was the first aircraft to be painted in the white-tailed version of the Star Alliance livery. A second B77W 9V-SWJ is expected within the next week or two in the same livery.

And before anyone call this yet another unauthorised version ... it should be noted that airlines such as Austrian Airlines have had this version.

With B773 9V-SYE soon to leave the fleet, it is then left with just B772 9V-SRI flying around with the version with the full SIA tail. It is inevitable that this too will give way to another aircraft in the white-tail version of Star Alliance livery to complete SIA's quota of three aircraft in the alliance's livery.

if nothing else, all these variations just make it more interesting for aviation spotters and photographers.

When do we get to see an A380 in Star livery?

If not at SQ, then perhaps at LH?

Long overdue! Without drifting too far off topic, LH has no immediate plans to launch a special scheme for their A380s. LH is somehow afraid this would take away brand awareness from them and they can't afford this to happen with their new flagship. But even more disappointing that QF hasn't launched a Wunaladreaming A388 (yet?) I'd actually donate to a fund to get such a thing flying..

Ditto. A OneWorld livery A380 cant be far off I'd have thought.
