Mesa Air Group Inc., which selected go! as the name of its startup Hawaii airline, tried later to change it to Aloha Airlines and then ended up with the cumbersome go!Mokulele, is going back to its roots.
Jonathan Ornstein, chairman and CEO of Mesa, said he is phasing out the name go!Mokulele from the company's Hawaii fleet of five 50-seat CRJ-200s and reverting to go! The change comes less than a year after Mesa sold its four nine-seat Cessna Caravans to Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Transpac Aviation Inc., which operates the Caravans under the name Mokulele Airlines.

"We didn't want to do the name change abruptly and hurt them with recognition, but they've got their website up and are doing fine," Ornstein said.
In fact, Mokulele CEO Ron Hansen said the airline is expanding and will be taking delivery of a fifth Caravan in Kona on Friday. Last month, Mokulele announced it would return service between Honolulu and Kapalua Airport in West Maui for the first time in three years beginning July 1. Mokulele primarily serves Hawaii's smaller markets.

I wish they still had the E170's instead of those little tiny CRJ's. They were what got me off Aloha at the time, then all went to heck and we have only HA's 717s and the aforementioned CRJ's.
On a somewhat related note, only because I brought it up, where did the E-Jets go that Mokulele had before they were merged with Go!?

They went back to Shuttle America/Republic (who at one point had a stake in the airline, not sure if they still do) to operate in the continental US.

I worked for Mesa for 2 years back from '08 to '10. What a cluster that place was. Orstein Is a complete joke of a CEO. How he remained CEO after the bankrupsy is amazing. It's shocking that he is as lack luster as can be, being a convicted felon and all. Thankfully Piedmont came in to rescue the day for ramp and gate crew. He has almost singly handedly ruined the name of Mesa Airlines for his own personal gratification. I hope Mesa air dies and merges with someone else significantly more popular and powerful.

I've always thought they should just call it "GO F Yourself" to reflect the company's values. Ironically, there is no F class per se. Every seat is F class.

Orstein promised larger aircraft since they began the operation, but despite the shut down of Aloha, has never been able to generate sufficient traffic to warrant the replacement of the CRJ 200's. HA at least in my opinion, is allowing them to exist, thus discouraging the entry of another serious airline who might create some real competition.

Go! Just needs to Go, as in away. I think the way they got into the Islands was shameful and they shouldn't be allowed to profit from their unscrupulous actions, not that I think Go is a cash cow or anything. A second strong airline to keep things honest in the inter-island market is a good thing, but this Go mess provides little competition as was stated above. I miss AQ. Even Discovery and Mahalo were local companies with some idea of how to approach this market. In order to be successful in Hawaiian skies you must reach both the tourist and local market and make yourself appealing to both, As would be true, almost anywhere, Hawaiians prefer a locally owned and operated company providing jobs for the people who live there currently, not importing almost everyone from the mainland or elsewhere.

Can anyone explain why Go! kept the Mokulele name even after Mesa divested itself of MW? Didn't that happen last fall? I am quite a fan of Mokulele, and am hoping that Go! still having MK's name attached has not hurt Mokulele itself.

You said it, When Go! came into Hawai'i they swore to eliminate both Aloha and HA by undercutting the pricing structure. They did it with Aloha, but HA was able to survive due to its mainland connections. This caused Go! to have a horrid reputation in Hawai'i and many people would fly only HA or Mokulele. When Go! acquired Mokulele, they kept the name to increase their pro Hawai'i and Hawaiian stance. It was a simple hopes of making up their image, but as HNL-Jack stated they also said they were going to get bigger jets and never did.

OK, This is pure conjecture..... What do you think the possibilities of Go! being sold to another airlines that has expansion plans to Hawai'i. I am thinking WN and G4 could do a partnership for an inter-island operations. I know the 737 cannot do the island hops due to heating/cooling problems, but what about the MD's of G4. Or could Island Air increase their presence and take over Go!?

They haven't even increased the number of aircraft, let alone increase the size. It is still stuck at 5, the same amount Mesa had at the shut down of AQ.

Not really. The amount of big box retailers that have found success in Hawaii disproves this. Just on Oahu we have 5 Walmarts, 4 Costcos, and 3 K-marts that are within 5-15 miles of each other. Understanding the local market is what is important.

J.O. wanted out of the ground ops anyway so he once again got what he wanted. All he wants Mesa to be is an airline with planes and crews, no ground ops, nothing else. Piedmont rescued you guys?? Really? They are not much better. The only thing you really have with them out west is J. "F" M. who looks out for his people unlike J.O.

I remember it was said along the way by someone familiar with the situation that the MD-81's were also proving to be too much of a plane to lift for such short hops. I believe this person also clarified saying the plane was far too heavy and fuel burn was an issue with the MDs.

I think this may come to pass more than any outside entity coming in to the islands and making a legitimate run at a successful start up flying inter-island. With WP signing an LOI to lease ATR 72-212's (3) by the end of 2012 and (3) more in 2013, this will greatly expand the capacity that WP will offer to the air services inter-island. This, I hope, will also return ITO to their route structure in the near future. I also hope they will keep a couple smaller aircraft (whether the dash 8 or get into extending or adding leases for their current leased/additional Saab 340) for service to JHM as the ATR will not be able to serve there due to runway length. I am not sure they would, at least initially, completely refresh the entire fleet.

Will they take over go!? I don't think they will take over them, though I believe the employees at WP will be especially glad to see those crj's go!

I know big box companies exist and thrive in Hawaii, Costco, K-Mart, Walmart all are low cost retailers, they built their companies on providing goods and services at bigger discounts because of their purchasing power, and in Costco's case they don't mark up anything more than 15%. The reason these companies do well is cost of living in Hawaii, many locals would rather shop longs drug than Walmart, but Walmart is cheaper, with many locals working in the tourism industry or support service industries, they traditionally earn lower wages and must make every dollar stretch, the price you pay for paradise I guess. These companies do provide lots of much needed jobs in Hawaii, and for that they become accepted.

I 100% agree with you that unless a company can understand the local market, they have no chance of survival. In the years I lived in Hawaii and sold local travel for Regal, I found fierce loyalty to AQ and HA, but most vacationers took the least expensive almost always. My high end clients flew whomever was most convenient, except a lawyer guy I did tons of Intl travel for, he only flew F, and was platinum medallion on DL, but when flying to HKG, he'd fly HNL-LAX-HKG just to always be on DL.

People think of Longs as a Hawaii company because they have been in Hawaii for so long, but it was never a local company. It was based in Walnut Creek, CA until CVS bought them. Longs has been successful because the head office has allowed Hawaii to have some local control over purchasing that allowed many ethnic items that locals want and use to be found in their stores at reasonable prices. There is a reason why CVS has kept the Longs name in Hawaii only.

OK, Longs was about as local of a Hawaii company name I could think of, but you got my point, right? I'd say ABC, but those are for tourists. Loves Bakery, TransHawaiian, Regal Travel, Aston, Outrigger, B of H, Straub Clinic, Uwajimaya.
I hope my point was not missed on a technicality, because it was accurate and a part of living in paradise, I'd gladly trade my life here in Portland for a little apartment in Kaneohe.
