Canadian Airlines And The 747-400

After the merger with AC, they were often on some OAC routes as well.

Canadian used the 744 for Hong Kong and Tokyo from Vancouver, anything else was rare. Europe and Brazil were 767-300ER and DC-10-30 territory.

For a while they used it on YUL-YYZ, as I vividly remember flying that route as it was my first 747 flight. They even served a hot dinner onboard. Must have been 1972 or 1973 possibly. 5PM departure from Montreal to Toronto, probably continued to Vancouver then onwards from there.

Before CP's first 744 went into service to NRT and HKG it operated for about 2 weeks for pilot training purposes on domestic routes. It replaced another aircraft on a YVR-YYZ flight and returned YYZ-YYC-YVR. I flew it on the YYC-YVR sector one night. It was almost empty as the usual aircraft on that YYZ-YYC-YVR flight was a 737-200.

CP Air only operated the 747-200 and it wouldn't have been before late 1973 and later if it was YUL. The first two were delivered in November and December 1973 and went into service in mid-December 1973 on the YVR-HND-HKG route. A daily YYZ-YVR-YYZ round trip was added in April 1974. In late 1974 when the last 2 742s were delivered the 742s began to appear on Europe routes which would have been the first time they appeared in YUL as some flights originated YYZ and stopped in YUL (YMX when Mirabel opened). They were also used to HNL during peak periods.

For a while in the early 1980s the YVR-YYZ 742 continued to YUL and overnighted there. There was no meal service on the YYZ-YUL sector as it left around 2200. However on the westbound flight YUL-YYZ at about 0700 there was a full hot breakfast which was a challenge on a 747 on a one-hour flight, although it was rarely more than about half full.

At some point in the mid-1980s (before they were traded to PIA for 4 of their DC-10-30s) they were also used to SYD.

I am guessing this might have been Air Canada. As they did have a flight AC149 YUL-YYZ-YVR, leaving YUL at 1700 and YYZ at 1930.

Living in Hawaii for several years in the late 80's - early 90's, CP 744's were regular visitors to HNL in season. I thought they went onwards to SYD from HNL though, or was that the YYZ-HNL DC-10 that went onwards to SYD?

You may have flown on Air Canada between YUL and YYZ. They often flew their 747-100/200 between YUL and YYZ as a continuation flight or repositioning flight between these cities.

Well, it could have been but two things I learned the most growing up near YUL - one was to know my aircraft, and the other was not to get caught with my girlfriend in Dad's 1970 Ford LTD parked by the fence up hanger row. RCMP didn't like that one. But I am pretty sure it was CP Air because I had nicknamed her "Big Orange". May have only been for a few months on a familiarization run ? The other sight I really remember was watching Speedbird in their 747 taking off 28 on the way to Toronto with 3 engines on one side and two on the other. Busted up our road hockey game for a few minutes !!

Another CP Air 747 route was YYZ-YHZ-AMS in the early 1980 s. You could fly the Toronto>Halifax leg domestic but not return as through AMS>YYZ passengers did not clear Canadian Customs in Halifax.

Here s Big Orange in Halifax (roughly where the US transborder facility is located now)

They also used to send them to LGW around the same time. I shall never forget being sat in the front seat of my Dad's car driving up the M23 on the way home from Brighton when one of those thundered overhead on final approach. My Dad never did appreciate why I got so excited about it!

And getting back to the picture above…….look at the choice of cars for rent in the Avis and Tilden (National) lot! (I had an Omni like that once)

Right, it was called the Parlor Car Lounge. The rear wall had lights that resembled old railway lanterns, and other decorations including railway semaphore signals etc. As with most 747 operators, the lounge didn't last very long once traffic picked up from the early '70s economic slump and oil price shocks etc., and they installed revenue seats upstairs.

The first 2 CP 742s only had one emergency exit upstairs so they were limited to 16 seats. The last 2 had one emegency exit on each side and were certified for 30 or 32 passengers on the upper deck (CP had 30 seats on those two, 5 rows, 3-3). The first 2, with only 16 Y seats 2-2 were very spacious with a very wide aisle and all sorts of empty space behind the 4 rows of seats. Quite a few carriers had the extra exit installed on their early 741s/742s after the lounges were removed to permit the additional passenger seating.

In their latter period of CP service the 742s had 12 first class sleeper seats upstairs, and the original F class recliner seats on the main deck became J class, with J expanded into the B zone for a total of 50 J instead of the original 28 F, but identical seats and seat pitch.

If memory correct, CP's 742s were the first ones built with the modified upper deck which added several feet to the interior cabin length at the rear. Some carriers used the additional space for an upper deck galley.

Shortly after Canadian were taken over by AC I flew LHR- YVR on a Canadian747-400.

I remember it vividly as we were just rotating at LHR when an alarm started going off and I was convinced we'd all die! However it transpired it was a faulty alarm [that should only have been triggered by a member of staff and not automatically]and we carried on to YVR with the alarm going off periodically during the first part of the flight!

Out of curiosity, what were typical weekly frequencies on these routes? Clearly not all of them could have been daily.

No and they all didn't happen at the same time. That was for a span of about 8 years.

YVR-HKG, YVR-NRT and some times of the year, YVR-HNL and YVR-TPE were daily, when they were operated by a B744.

The rest were add-ons and for short term. They would appear in one timetable, but not the next. And some, like YVR-NGO were daily flights, just not always a B744.

- Vancouver - Taipei increases to daily service effective December 1993 (operated by DC10)
- Six 747-400 flights weekly between Canada and Bangkok
- The only non-stop service available between Canada and Nagoya (operated by DC10)
