CVG Flights And Rain Man

Watching the part of Rain Man where it is mentioned that Qantas never crashed, I am a little curious about the flights from CVG mentioned in the movie. For example, did AA or CO ever fly CVG-LAX? They were mentioned as airlines in the movie. Also, did QF ever fly CVG-MEL (or to CVG period)?

DL was operating CVG-LAX at the time and both AA and TW had served CVG-LAX at different times as well. If I had to guess though, the non-DL flights he was listing off were probably through-flights with a stop somewhere.

No they never have unless...unless you count codesharing via AA

According to Wikipedia, Concourse C did not open until 1994. The scene looks like it could have been filmed in Terminal 2.

considering the placement of the windows during the scene, I always assumed that they were in Terminal 2. I could be wrong though, since my experience flying through that terminal is extremely limited

Another myth. Qantas has had at least 10 fatal crashes - the last in 1951. They have had one hull loss since - a Super Connie in 1960.

The Sept 1999 B747 overrun at Bangkok would have been a hull loss crash for any other airline. Qantas spent more than enough money to buy a new replacement returning the badly damaged aircraft to service. To maintain their claim they never lost a jet aircraft to a crash.

First of all...this movie was filmed in 1988 and PRIOR to what we know now as Concourse C (the former Comair concourse) there was ANOTHER Concourse C as you can see in this map:

From 1986:

Now... check out this clip at the 1:52 point where it shows the departure monitors:

The clip shows flights for Delta, American, TWA, Pan Am, Continental and Piedmont.

According to the above mentioned terminal maps..... in 1986 and 1991, Concourse/Terminal C WAS the concourse used by Delta/Comair in 86 and by American, Continental and TWA in 1991..... (Pan Am was no longer at Cincinnati at this point and Piedmont had been acquired by USAir by then.) So it is HIGHLY likely that in 1988, Delta, American, TWA, Pan Am, Continental and Piedmont WERE in Concourse/Terminal C.

Now... going further into my geekness... I tried to see how accurate those fid screens were. The CLOSEST I could pinpoint was that that scene was filed in Concourse/Terminal C around April 1988.

From various airline timetables in my collection dated April 1998: (Again, refer to the fid screens shown at the 1:52 point of the video).... I could compile THIS information:

Delta 419 12:36pm Lexington    (727-200)

Delta 1559 12:45pm Salt Lake City-Los Angeles    (727-200)

TWA 541 1:20pm Saint Louis   (Do not have a TWA timetable for that exact period but TWA DID have a flight to Saint Louis that left at various times in 1988 in the 1:20pm-1:30pm time frame.)

American 4407 1:30pm Nashville    (Swearingen Metro)

Pan Am 570 2:40pm New York Kennedy    (727-200)

American 232 2:50pm Chicago-Los Angeles   (Nothing even close... no flights to Chicago around that time and no direct flights to Los Angeles.)

Delta 354 3:09pm Columbus    (MD-80)

Continental 1137/1137 (cannot make out the number clearly) 4:05pm Denver   (Do not have a Continental timetable from that exact period but Continental DID have a 4:05 flight to Denver in other timetables earlier in 1988 - interestingly, by September 1988 Continental had dropped Cincinnati and was not flying there at all.)

Continental 144 5:10pm Los Angeles   (Cannot find ANY existence of such a flight! Continental only appears to have operated three daily flights from Cincinnati at in early 1988 - an early morning Cincinnati-Indianapolis-Houston flight and two nonstops to Denver...NONE of which left anytime close to 5:10pm. And, as stated previously, Continental would pull out of Cincinnati very soon after that.)

American 397 5:30pm Chicago    (727-100)

Delta 897 7:18pm Los Angeles    (767-200)

American 2021 8:45pm Chicago    (737-300)   (Learn something new every day! I never knew the ex-AirCal 737-300s made it out east!)

TWA 597 8:50pm Saint Louis   

Piedmont 234 9:00pm Newark   

Delta 486 10:58pm Detroit    (727-200)

Delta 1021 12:15am Los Angeles   (No sign of anything even REMOTELY CLOSE!)

So there you have a waaay over-analyzed answer to your question....LOL.

Yeah... there was an old Concourse/Terminal C..... yes... the airlines that are shown on the fids in "Rain Man" DID use that concourse....

It DOES appear that the flights on the fids were, for the MOST part, correct... but it does seem like a few Los Angeles flights may have been added for effect.

(By the way... I do hope after ALL of this... someone appreciates the work. LOL!)

It was Terminal 3, and the Concourse was labelled as 'C'. I was too young to remember prior to the Concourse A and B arrangement, but I think in reality it was in practical terms just 'T3' insofar as there weren't multiple concourses off of T3 like there have been since 1994. I know A came before B, and then C somewhere in there (the OH C we recognize), but that's the most I have.

I was able to find the flight. TW 581 (DC-9)

There was AA 815 departing at 2:00 pm CVG-DFW-OAK-LAX (Time was close, but flight number wasn't)

As suggested: it was the bridge between what is now T2 and T3 (which ironically is now just "The Terminal" as it's the only one open!). You can recognize the view by the low windows.

Has it occurred to anyone that when Charlie Babbitt reads the airline options to Raymond, it doesn't reflect reality because the main point is they have to end up driving. There is no AA or CO flight to LAX in real world 1988 CVG, but there is in the story so that they are forced to drive when Raymond rejects them all.
