Hi Everyone,

A while ago SA was running a competition locally that students and school kids could download a template of an Airbus A340-600 and design a colour scheme that will be used on the plane that flies the South African team to the Olympic Games. This was in April / May but it seems to have gone a bit quiet.

Anyone have more info? Final design or is the plane painted?

Ndizani was the last time SA did something like this with a B743

Hi Jasondn

Just heard on the radio that the competition was won by a design student from Stellenbosch.

The team is scheduled to depart 19th July on the 'special' A340. I'll definitely be at JNB to see it on this day.

I have not heard anything else beyond the above.

Regards,

Shudu

Great! Thanks Shudu. Looking forward to seeing the plane in the "flesh".

Hope it looks good! Lately, the Olympic colorschemes have SUCKED! (i.e., BA "Dove")

Just found this link with more information and pics of the first paint strokes;

http://www.iol.co.za/dailynews/news/flying-high-1.1336812

Its being reported that the aircraft is an Airbus A340-300 and not an A346 as previously confirmed. I believe it is ZS-SXD.

Regards,

Shudu

Hi, I came across this article and it has a picture of the front of the plane. Anyone seen it on the ramp at OR Tambo?

This is all I could find on it. Hardly very special like Ndizani...

Good initiative by SAA and indeed is it less extensive than what I was expecting. Still a nice move by SAA...

It looks very conservative compared to what we saw with Ndizani, am a bit underwhelmed.

I guess it's the thought that counts

Looking at the pic linked above, looks like it's been applied to an A340-200/300 rather than the -600 variant.

I think they picked this kind of theme as a winner as it can be decalled and not need a repaint like ndizani...

Seems like a good observation. I'd guess then A343 as the -200's are going i think...

I must say I totally agree. I was also underwhelmed when I saw the first pictures that only showed the front. Having seen the whole aircraft, I like it.

I'm tired of the A vs. B sniping. Neither make planes that shed wings randomly!
