After grounding all flights because of the announced strike by the employees, Pluna has decided to shut down operations indefinitely according to the Uruguayan press:

http://www.elpais.com.uy/120705/ultm...de-dejar-de-volar-indefinidamente/

Reuters already reports that the government has decided to liquidate the airline:

on one side they would increse their footprint in SouthAmerica but on the other side they can already with the current LATAM group serve Uruguay as they want, as I can not imagine that their should be to much interesting domestic traffic for them in Uruguay.

cheers

How is this a surprise? If anything the surprise is that PLUNA lasted this long.

I am somehow confused though. One article mentions that the airline will go into "Concurso de Acreedores". That is somehow akin to Chapter 11, not necessarily liquidation.

The other article, though, does use the word "liquidation" as in "liquidar la empresa."

Maybe there is some hope yet?

Wow, I just flew them in late May on one of their CRJs. Nice airline, fantastic terminal at MVD. The fare for the little hop from BA to Montevideo was $125 or so one way, figured for a 40 minute flight they were certainly making money, when it costs far less to go further between LA and SF, a farther distance where fares are 49-69 bucks. Sorry to see them go.

Per wiki:

In April 2010, Chorus Aviation purchased a 33 1/3% interest in the Latin American Regional Aviation Holding Corporation (LARAH). In turn, LARAH owns a 75% interest in PLUNA, while the remaining 25% is owned by the Uruguayan government.

PLUNA's fleet consists of 13 Bombardier CRJ900s regional jet aircraft (90 seats in an all-economy class layout), with an average age of 2.7 years.

To prevent scope clause, Chorus could easily convert the cabin in two class seat layout (10J, 65Y like their CRJ705) and operate them in Jazz or Air Canada Express colors.

I believe that´s out of date. The articles cited by the OP mention that PLUNA is owned entirely by the Uruguayan government since sometime this year. May I believe?

Really sad news it was thanks to PLUNA that I became interested in aviation, the pilots asked me if I wanted to land in the cockpit with them when I was 12 in June 2003. The a/c was a B733.

No surprise at all unfortunately...
Once the LeadGate group pulled out, the government (owner of 25% of the company) tried to convince Jazz to acquire the remaining 75% (Jazz had previously partnered with LeadGate). Jazz had actually a month to decide while Juan Carlos Lopez Mena (owner of BQB and already offering close to 70 million USD to capitalize the airline) waited for his chance.

While this was going on the union found out that Lopez Mena intended to reduce staff from 900 to 700 employees. As the airline was temporarily under the government's administration, the union came up with the brilliant idea of a 3 day strike (unions in Uruguay are very much used to getting their way with the government). This caused Lopez Mena to change his mind and pull out of the negotiations. And damage done to the airline as far as reliability was tremendous: who the heck is going to buy a ticket with them anymore? If Jazz was already doubting any investment this was the final nail in the coffin.

I am pretty sure "Concurso de Acreedores" in this case means liquidation. The way I see things now, all the routes become available and Lopez Mena can expand BQB at will. Now he doesn't have to deal with the Pluna union, can buy the CRJs if he wants to (I'm sure the government will bend over backwards to try to save the investment somehow) and can hire those ex-Pluna employees he wishes, paying them whatever he deems convenient.

I am sad to see Pluna go. I worked there and was proud when I did. But even back then you could see where things were headed...

Anyone here knows what protection ( from IATA or / + the Uruguayan Law ) have the people who have tickets booked with them ? I have very close relatives who are booked for a flight to Santiago in September, and apparently the airline will be six feet under well before...
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

To summarize, they say they are trying to take care of those passengers flying in the next few days. Beyond that, they are saying that they might not be able to help. As far as the law, stranded passengers might have a right somewhere, but good luck getting any results soon...

Are the CRJs owned by Pluna or leased from Bombardier? I hope that none of these birds ends up languishing at MVD/SUMU as it normally happens in Brazil. Many airports in Brazil have a few derelict remains of TransBrasil, VASP, etc. fleets. A sad view indeed.

It might sound that simple but it is not. Under the CPA, AC decides how many aircrafts and of what type QK will fly. This, in turn, is driven of course by markets needs but also with scope clauses with ACPA. I don't have the exact info on hand, but a part of the scope clause with ACPA pertains to a ratio of AC total ASM that can be flown by tier II carriers but also by the maximum size of the airplane, which happens to be "jet of 75 seats max". The reason that QK is operating the CRJ705 is because the CRJ900 is certified for 86 seats and AC is operating the EMB175, with 73 seats but certified to 88 seats max.

So in order for QK to take those frames, there would have to be a need for AC to use these, a boost in total AC system-wide ASM in order to keep the ratios under the limits and a waiver from ACPA for them to use the CR9 instead of CRA. Not gonna happen.

Of course this could all change after the collective bargaining agreement gets selected by the appointed Justice in a few weeks.

if your flight goes MX in YUL, I might be called to fix it!

Leadgate got out about a month ago, so the Uruguayan Government is the sole owner - you are correct in what you are saying.

PU had ticketing/endorsement agreements with AR - in the MVD/AEP route where they switched passengers back and forth in case of any abnormalities - they will probably endorse all of their passengers into AR. In the MVD/AEP route they have also used Buquebus as an alternative.

PU had a severe case of cosmetics financials - everything was advertised as easygoing, and smoothly - however, 30 days after LeadGate's exit everything goes bust... I sincerely doubt that what LeadGate posted was the truth. Moreover, everything was done with Mr. Vazquez Government's conscent.

Indeed... now it is being acknowledged that the real trigger for the ceasing of operations is the lawsuit filed against Pluna by ex Varig employees from Brazil. I just heard a number on a news report (unconfirmed) of 3500 million dollars

What is confirmed by the report (Spanish only, sorry) is that the government is in a real hurry to get rid of the Pluna identity to avoid having to pay any money.
