CRJ Settled Into The Ramp In DCA

The title may seem a little dramatic, but a coworker just sent me this picture that was apparently taken yesterday (7/7/12) of a US CRJ that settled into the ramp pavement in DCA due to extreme temps. Does anybody have any more information on this? Here is a link to the picture:

Imagine if it had been a heavier plane, with a similar tire footprint, like an MD-80, a 737, or an A320...
It doesn't just have to be high temps, though; here at my home airport, snow melt often runs under the tarmac, washes out the dirt, and creates a gap between solid ground and asphalt. This gap becomes very evident as planes and ramp equipment pass over the area, and the asphalt starts to deteriorate rapidly!

When I worked in SHV in 80-82, the ramp was made up of concrete sections. After a torrential downpour, it took awhile for the water to drain away from underneath because of the clay. Planes would taxi up to the jetway and water would squirt up between the sections as they did so. After I transferred to SLC, I was told that SHV had some diversions from DFW because of wx. A couple of them were Tristars, which had to park on the taxiway instead of the ramp because the ramp would not support the a/c.

Good question. My guess is not too long...am I crazy or do I see depressions in the pavement from where the aircraft was taxiing in as well?

Additionally, the parking area has been reconfigured in the past two weeks. It's gone from supporting 12 planes to supporting 14 and a spare...wonder if this aircraft parked on a section of ramp that didn't get much taxi activity before?

That happens in my station from time to time, though maybe "bubbles up" is more a more accurate term to use... Either way, kinda weird to see when you're pushing one out!

This happened to me with a DC-10F several years ago. Had to defuel, and really work it to get out of the ruts. The airport measured, and put in concrete patches so it didn't happen again.

Had to start the engines, and power forward, then use the pushback to get it out of the spot.

Does the CRJ-200 have a particularly high weigh per tire surface area ratio? 737's, A320's, and MD-80's also have two two-wheel main gear bogeys, but I assume they have bigger tires proportional to the weight they bear.

You are right Mayor. I flew through SHV many times in 727's and remember talking to the agents about the "squirting" of the water up through the sections. That concrete must have had a lot of rebar reinforcement in it. The 72 with only four main tires had a high weight footprint.

Nope, it looks that way to me also. I would take it that this is why PHX is all concrete as we would have everything sinking with our mild summer temperatures on asphalt.

I also believe there is elasticity to asphalt, but I do not think the depressions will go away on that one. I also wonder what damage the push could do on that stuff also?

In general a lot of that side of the airport is asphalt since its on reclaimed land. If they tried to build it all with concrete like other areas it would constantly crack and pothole.

If you look a the ramp areas (other than the actual gate pads) abeam gates 35 - 39 you will see its all asphalt as well and there are some really bad ruts around the hold spots.

Had an experience with a B737 once........We had to reduce the weight totally/Defuel the aircraft to bare minimum fuel before towing it out.Thankfully it was a Freighter so it was easier.....

We used to say you could tell the difference between the ex-Navy and ex-Air Force pilots by the way they landed. The Navy guys looked like they were trying to catch the #3 wire and the Air Force guys took as much runway as they could before they settled in.
