Given that the new First product is available on 63 aircraft now I was suprised to read that BA will only "Guarantee" it on 3 routes,

BA5/BA6 London Heathrow - Tokyo Narita

BA7/BA8 London Heathrow - Tokyo Haneda

BA169/BA168 London Heathrow - Shanghai

Would have thought they could have upped the guarantee rate a bit more.

you don't get a second chance to make a first impression!

It's just an a*se covering maneouvre I would have thought.

Flying is like sex - I've never had all I wanted but occasionally I've had all I can stand.

I assume that these routes are guaranteed because they are only flown with the RR 772s or the 77Ws which have guaranteed New First. Any 747 route could potentially change between new and old and the chances of New First are lowered significantly on other 777 routes until BA completes the refit of those planes.

The reason these are guaranteed is that Narita and Shanghai are only operated by a 777-300ER and Haneda is only operated by a four class RR powered 777-200ER.

Once the IFE retrofit of the 777-200s is complete then all 777 routes offering First will have the new product.

The 747 fleet however will (at the moment) not be able to guarantee the new product as not all the aircraft are currently due to be modified.

Here is what the British Airways site says at:

http://www.britishairways.com/travel/first/public/en_gb

about the availability of their New First Cabin:

"Available now on select routes

"We’re currently rolling out the new First cabin across our fleet and have already completed more than 75% of the planned longhaul aircraft.

"Experience the new First cabin on flights between London Heathrow and Lagos, New York JFK, Shanghai, Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita, Hong Kong and Sao Paulo (subject to availability). The cabin design may vary on other routes but all other aspects of the First experience remain the same, including access to exclusive lounges, top quality in-flight dining and premium service by our attentive cabin crew."

Note that BA does not offer the "guarantee" suggested at the independent "The BA Source" but simply says "subject to availability" because until 100 per cent conversions are complete substitution is always a possibility. Here note that BA apparently does not plan to convert 13 of its 'Mid J' 744s. In so far as even one of these 13 aircraft remain in service when it could be substituted on any route I doubt that BA will "guarantee" their New First Cabin on even one route but they may well increase the number of destinations where they state it will be used "subject to availability".
