Hi Guys,

If posted before, please delete.

It appears SA has sold it's LHR landing slot after canceling the CPT to LHR route.

It has been mentioned somewhere earlier.

Anyway they sold it to SQ who will add a 4th daily SIN-LHR service.

In the discussion thread about the Cape Town route being dropped, the understanding was that it would be leased out and specifically to SQ. The sale of the slot is something new.

I really, really just hope the money doesn't get burnt up in operating costs and no bonuses get paid for the extra profit.

Ah I am wondering the same thing, I believe in 2008 CO paid $4 million for a pair.

I also wonder since it is leased I wonder if it is by the week/month/year

According to the Financial Times [UK business newspaper]: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/fc7dc528-e...99-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz20xtFiEDu

In 2008 Continental paid a record price for Heathrow slots of $209m for four pairs. The FT also estimates that BA paid around $200m for six pairs of LHR slots in 2011. Naturally the price moves up and down but SAA could be looking at $30m-$50m for their slot - probably a heck of a lot more than the profits they would make on their CPT-LHR route.

It would be sad for SAA to sell the Cape town slot, they should lease it out. This is a strategic asset at the most important international destination for SAA. The day will come when they will want to add back a third flight from South Africa which could be a third JNB flight.

I totally agree with your statement. LHR slots are valuable and SAA should think twice before selling it off instead of leasing it out (if possible) IMHO. Everything should not be funneled through JNB. Watch out SAA!

But SAA *don't* think. That is the problem. If they used their brains, they wouldn't need to be asking for another R6 BILLION bailout/funding/whatever...

They seem rather inept at running a business. Watch this space. They will be running around showing how much *profit* they made, just like when the fleets were sold off and leased back. That is money down the tubes never to be seen again. After their slots go, and the money of the sales (wasted) into the breeze, they will have nothing to their name, but overly high operating costs...

It is a shame that LHR doesnt grow - would be nice to see airlines able expand without having to pay ridiculous sums of cash for slots. I guess that is why Czech pulled out.... selling slots was more profitable than the flying.

In these times of cross border airlne mergers like in Latin America, SAA should consider a LATAM African type company. Ethiopian Airlines would make a grea airline to merge with if the politics stay out of it. IT may be wishful thinking but if the future has arrived in one largely third world part of the world it will get to others, its not "if" but "when ".

After those LHR slots are gone, well if SA ever wants to re-start CPT-LON - even if thrice weekly, red-eyes both ways - it'll be to LGW (or to LHR partner airport STN?).
Would SA crews make such a fuss of arriving in LHR and having to depart from LGW or the other way around?
