Came across this video during some down time I had at work. Thought it was a great video and wanted to share. Still never get over the approach to this airport. Whats so great is they got shots outside and inside of the final hours of this airport being open.

Really cool video. Its hard to imagine an airport simply closing and shutting off the lights, and was it my imagination or was that what they did there in the last few seconds of the video. Looks like they just shut off all of the runway/taxi lights. Of course, from my experience it looks as if PIT closes every night!

Seriously though, what is the procedure in the simplest form (I would guess it is pretty complex) in closing an airport of that size? I would assume most of the complexity would come from tower operations and ATC? Or is it as "simple" as scheduling the last flight, load, send off, a little housekeeping, and shut off the lights on your way out? Saw armed guards at the departures stairs, they trying to keep people from looting the place?

Agreed! Very cool video. Actually felt some nostalgia watching that. Started with the scene where the shops were secured for the final time.

Thanks for sharing.

That's happened at other airports. A few that come to mind:

Denver Stapleton when the new DEN airport opened in 1995.
Munich Riem when the new MUC airport opened in 1992.
Berlin Tempelhof when it was closed in 2008.
And Berlin Tegel (TXL) should have closed last month, but remains open until next March due to the various problems that prevented the new Berlin Brandenburg airport from opening on the long-planned June 3, 2012 date.

The scene where the long runway 13/31 was shut happened I believe at around 3am, after the last ferry flight took off bound for the current VHHH.

The whole thing actually lasted for a few hours starting at around 9pm local. AFAIK it was an AC A340 that was the first to leave and it was followed by all other aircrafts in the airport. The last arrival happened at around 11pm which could have been the one that appeared at 11:25pm in the video. I also remember it was a KA metal which matches with what was in the video, but AFAIK it was an A320 however I think I saw an A330 (?) in the video

There's another video around, which showed the small ceremony in the control tower when the controller on duty simply said ' Goodbye Kai Tak and thank you' before dimming the lights. I always sniff a bit when I come across it.

Truly an amazing airport.

On a related note, I understand that Kai Tak was used for cargo operations after the closure, hence the temporary VHHX code. This meant that some cargo flights actually operated into Kai Tak after its official closure?
