I know that Skytrax is not really "realistic" but i am always (negatively) surprised that Singapore Changi Airport is constantly rated better than Hong Kong International.

I think HKG is much more advanced, has far better infrastructure, is brighter and easier to navigate. Don't understand why Changi is still second... (Airport express, anyone? long taxi cues? 5 bus lines only? MRT line with changing trains to get to town? ...)

Indeed, LIM once again wins the award as the best airport in South America. Glad to see that GYE came in second place! GYE deserves it since the airport is very modern and convenient for the passengers that use the airport.

I see LHR is slowly but surely moving up the rankings.

Interestingly this survey votes T5 as best terminal, LHR best for shopping and second for dining.

This is no surprise really as LHR has basically become a series of shopping malls and food courts, which just happens to have an airport attached. Now they have got the non-flying aspects of an airport 'right' maybe BAA should start looking a bit more closely at the actual flying experience - security clearance and baggage might be a good place to start [and a course on smiling for the immigration staff].

Great to see ATH in the top ten . They have really worked hard over the last few years in terms of keeping the place clean and to offer a decent travel experience. Free wifi , free drinking water, quick security lanes, numerous decent lounges ,public seating areas and incentives for Airlines. In the current climate they really have stepped upto the mark .

I know that Skytrax is not really "realistic" but i am always (negatively) surprised that Singapore Changi Airport is constantly rated better than Hong Kong International.

Believe it or believe it not this is what Skytrax claims:

"The results are based on 12 million passenger surveys completed in a 10-month survey period, covering over 388 airports. The survey evaluates the total passenger experience across 39 airport service and product features, from arrival at an airport, through transit and departure processes to the boarding gate. Since 1999, this annual airport customer survey has been respected for clarity and independence, with no airport influence or bias. The World Airport Awards are the global benchmark of airport excellence, known as the Passenger's Choice Awards."

As far as HKG v SIN is concerned take comfort in the fact that HKG is top of the pile in the over 50 million paqssengers a year category ahead of PEK and LHR while SIN is "only" number two behind ICN and ahead of AMS in the 30 to 50 million passenger a year category. Could it be that sheer size is a negative factor in some respondents minds, particularly if their use of the airport is as a transfer passenger?

Here are North America's top 10:

YVR
CVG
SFO
DEN
YYZ
DFW
ATL
MSP
YHZ
SEA

YVR is decent, but I don't really see what makes it a good airport vs. the others besides the fact that it has wooden rafters and some native decor. Note that all of these airports are in major cities with international service, so I question whether these airports made the list simply because more respondents had flown through them. However, some of the best airports in the US have very limited international service, such as DCA, MDW and HOU, which I believe are great because of their convenient size, proximity to the city center and modern facilities. I also think YUL is a good airport because of its practical design and modernized immigration facilities. Out of the list, I give kudos to DFW for its international terminal but would replace ATL with DTW. I don't see how concourses crammed with people and windowless gates make you one of the best.

That could very well be it. That's the tradeoff between having one giant terminal vs. various smaller ones.

Sorry but give me Singapore any day, customs & luggage claim so much faster , i find Singapore a lot better on the eye in all terminals , food and drink areas are so much better, transport not a real issue i always have a car pick up organised or a taxi . Yes hong Kong has the train into town , but then you have to lug cases from station to hotel or get a cab , sorry cant be bothered

buts that's just my view

I've taken a number of independent surveys at PHX and CVG but I don't know if they do anything with Skytrax. How is one polled on Skytrax?
This is also what surprised me (a previous post was deleted as the original reference post was deleted)
