ANA begins service to SEA from NRT tomorrow, 7/25 using 777-300ER equipment. Who is going to be there? Anyone on the first arrival/departure?

I believe that this is the third n/s between the two airports, since SEA-NRT already has DL with a 333 and UA with a 777, but obviously the first by a Japanese carrier.

I guess that maybe there is enough traffic between the two points to warrant a third flight? Maybe this flight is aimed at the Japanese nationals that travel here?

However, it would seem that DL has the advantage with connects, given the relationship between DL and AS, there are plenty. But with *A, the only connects here that don't have their own n/s service are to NRT are PHX, DEN (but soon to be gone), CLT, and PHL.

At any rate, all the best to NH and SEA.

The first by a Japanese carrier currently operating, JL at one time or another has served SEA, not sure the time frame, IIRC sometime in the 80'a.

Must be... I haven't seen much in the way of advertizing in the Seattle area. There were billboards and printed ads all over the place prior to EK starting their Dubai service. Maybe they're saving the fanfare for the launch of the 787 service?

NH have been running lower front page banner ads in the newsprint edition of The Seattle Times.

I saw it this morning. It appears that the Port of Seattle is actually running those ads.

This will be the first time in a decade that there will be three airlines on SEA-NRT again. One 772 and one A333 does not seen like enough capacity but I think adding a 77W is too much although ANA's 77Ws are relative low capacity.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I'm Seattle sees far more Japanese traffic during the summer than during the winter. The 787 (which has about half the capacity) will flying in here during the off-peak seasons.

Just got off the flight in business. Lots of hoopla at NRT. Dignitaries, cheerleaders, media. Starbucks coffee given to anyone in the area. Passengers received a commemorative Starbucks mug with ANA NRT-SEA on it.

Water salute upon landing.

I wonder if Ichiro being traded to the Yankees is going to affect loads... As someone who lived in Japan for ten years I know that seeing Ichiro play was a major draw for tourists in Seattle; maybe it won't factor in at all, but the timing of the trade is definitely not the best!

Seattle has been one of the top cities for Japanese tourists to visit, so losing him probably won't help.

I was thinking this exact thing, in fact my buddies and I spoke of this exact issue, the best that we could come up with was Seattle would loose that baseball tourism from Japan, and especially during a playoff event, planes have been chartered to bring Japanese tourists to SEA to see Ichiro and the Mariners play, plus the myriad of Mariners items that are sold in Japan purely because of Ichiro, it's almost a status thing to be into the Mariners, the Japanese do love their baseball, and Ichiro is a great outfielder and an awesomely consistent hitter.

There is revenue that comes when the Mariners play games over in Japan purely because of that long standing loyalty between the M's and the Japanese. I think the ripple of him leaving will impact many businesses and individual workers throughout the city. I know Ichiro asked for this trade, and it was cool of Seattle to let him get a chance at a ring, he is an amazing player and deserves it, very cool of the M's to let him have an opportunity to get that series win, before he is no longer to perform like he did when he started.

Ichiro is definitely a legend for the Mariners. Sad to see him go. Perhaps an up-and-coming Japanese ball player will fill his shoes with Mariners and build up a great reputation within the Japanese community. We'll see what happens.

The Icharo factor has been discussed, and a dropoff in Mariner tours from Japan has been noticed. I was not able to find a link in either of the local papers but there was a story.

I can remember seeing the M's play in the crowds were throngs of Japanese people, that almost all stood when he was announced at the beginning of the game, and every at bat he had, which admittedly was excellent as he averaged .333 that game, but almost each person had a M's jacket, Ball cap, Pennant and a myriad of ballpark favorites to eat and drink, they look like they were having a great time watching a living hero, but also looked like they spent a boatload of cash too. I expect the impact will be felt deeper than is anticipated.

Maybe this is why NH decided to add a 2nd daily 77W flight between NRT-JFK.
