Hello fellow plane freaks!
United Airlines is in the process of installing new plasma screen signage in the gates of SFO. Currently, almost all of the gates in the 80's wing of the terminal have been completed.
For those of you who are familiar with United's gate displays at O'Hare in Chicago, these signs are exactly the same.
The goal with the new signage is to provide more information to the passenger. Aside from the destination, flight number, and departure time; the new signs display the aircraft type, weather conditions in the destination, the inflight service, as well as much more usefull information.
Its nice to see a change in the gate displays. I hope that Dulles gets them soon. Does anyone know what the status of that is?

I haven't seen these screens....indeed that does sound cool a/c type and service provided huh? Not bad. I wonder if the other airlines will match that one. So there is room for all that info to be displayed per flight#?

I hope UA speeds up in the installation of these screens at the other hub cities aswell. They look great... but nothing can match the flat screens Delta has at ATL. Those things are fantastic! They display the standby list, a list of those processed from the standby list, aircraft type, and seating chart, weather conditions at the destination (aswell as a long term forecast), it tells how the standby list is prioritized, how many seats Coach/First holds, and how many people have checked in for each cabin.

From the picture in the newsletter it looked like it would have all that plus the next flight # and departure time for the gate, as well as all the other stuff above.

Im not sure if the new signs display the standby list, but it would be nice if they did.

NWA has a new gate screen to. It is more like TV sized so it is smaller than UA or DL. The new screens tell all the usual info :flt #, gate, departure time, etc.
The also tell what kind of meal service will be provided, the weather at the destination, and the time the indbound flight will arrive at the gate.
The can also display a radar map to show passengers where the weather that is causing the delay is and where it is headed. I have heard from the gate agents that they can program more information in, such as levels checked in and if the the flights is overbooked and they need volunteers etc.
The only problem with the screens is that they are sort of small. The font size seems to have been increased which has helped.
They do provide answers to all those little questions that people ask gate agents.

I've seen the new displays at SFO. They are pretty cool. Will the int'l terminal get them too? The ones that are there now are kinda outdated.

One reason I love traveling UAL in ORD is these new screens. It's fun just to walk down the concourses and see where the delays are and what's the cause. It was extremely helpful to me when my flight was delayed back to MSP a year ago. I had missed the announcement over the PA system but I got all the info. I'd ever want from these screens.
As for the new NWA screens, currently installed at MSP and maybe elsewhere. They're no where as good. As Nwa747-400 said they're only the size of a normal tv and don't display nearly as much info.

These screens also indicate meal service, plane type,a landmark picture at your destination and if that flight is a code-share,that airlines' logo and flight #. These screens are VERY cool!!!!

Maybe Southwest will jump on the "high tech" screen bandwaggon and install them at thier major cities. I would love to see those here at ABQ when they build the expansion. I believe that the new expansion being planned is going to be for Southwest, so that would be cool.

Don't count on WN doing that - most of their stations don't even have LED screens behind the gates -- old placards is the norm for them...
And that's as it should be - low-cost... that's their mantra...

The new screens at ORD are fantastic. It should be really cool to see them at SFO. Although I don't think they are as informative as the DL ones at ATL, they certainly are as or even more tasteful.

That's cool that they've expanded that service to SFO, it was really cool to see it back in June when I was in O'hare. I doubt it'd be at the top of UA's list but I hope some day they expand them to LAX.
The screens at O'hare don't say anything about waiting lists for first/biz class etc. so I doubt they would at SFO.

United EasyInfo is being progressively rolled out to the 5 hubs throughout 2001. ORD has been done for quite some time, and SFO is coming along. LAX is next, with IAD and DEN following.
Look for the only UA advertising to be about its two highest-profile "Easy Travel Products"... United EasyInfo and EasyCheck-in. These will be advertised via TV, radio, billboard, and print media.
The 2 TV commercials (being rolled out in major metropolitan markets very soon) are HILARIOUS. We're talking CLEO material here.

It would be nice if they took some of the money going into these high-class screens and put it back into passenger service in the air! How many people hang around the gate to get the latest weather forecast anyway? If you paid $1500 for a first class ticket, which would you rather have, a tablecloth and glassware on your flight, or an expensive screen behind a rude ticket agent? Maybe they should have the graphics talk, i.e. Statue of Liberty sez "Your flight has been cancelled."

While there has been some service cutbacks, United Airlines still offers a very good inflight product. I suggest that you try it before you beat it down.

I'm not bashing United per se, but I do think that airlines in general have gotten too caught up in flashy gimmicks and high-tech wizardry and have forgotton about "customer service." Take a poll of 100 frequent flyers and ask which they'd rather have, kick-butt graphics at the gate or better inflight service. Some of us actually PAY for our tickets, you know, and quite frankly, I would rather my $400 go towards making me more comfortable instead of wowing me at the gate! If airlines can afford to redo their gate podiums with signs that tell you the barometric pressure at your destination and the pilot's cholesterol level, surely they can afford to serve you more than just a sack lunch on a 2.5 hour flight! And, finally, I HAVE experienced United's inflight service in the past few months, and given my level of expectation, had no major complaints.
