Hello Folks,

this photo is up in the top five today, and it caught me by surpise. A DE 767 in retro colours, dated July 2012?

Can somebody please explain what's up with this airplane? I know that DE have aquired a couple more 767 (there's one white knight which has been sitting on the tarmac at FRA for months now) but I had no idea that they were going to paint a special jet. If I'm correct this should then be the largest retroliner registered in Germany (although you can clearly see the registration is still Irish).

Or is this nothing more than an aircraft from older days, just pulled out of a hanger?

Thanks for your support!

Are there destinations that Condor specifically uses non-winglet 763s? If not, looking forward to catching this guy at SEA.

Quoting cargolex (Reply 5):

I believe they are all strictly long-haul, Carribean, American West and SE Asia mostly, so no. I wouldn't be surprised if they are going to retrofit them at some point in time. All their 767s and 757s have them.

I find it highly pleasing that Thomas Cook gave them the freedom to put the Condor logo on the tail, instead of the company "egg". As a matter of fact I cannot see any sign of Thomas Cook anywhere on the aircraft!

- DE also use these 767's to places like PMI, I made D-ABUL, a recent addition, ex AZ, there last week.

What decade is this livery from, 60s-70s? All the photos in the database of Condor only go back to the late 1990s.

EDIT: The livery is from the 1960s ('63 to be exact). According to this: http://worldairlinenews.com/2012/07/...duces-a-1963-yellow-tail-retrojet/

That's the 70s look. They should paint another one in that style and name the first "Max" and the other "Moritz", remembreing the famous 747-100 duo of the 70s which did realkly short haul flying, a very popular route was DUS-PMI in competition with LTU 1011s, the latter up to 5 times daily.

By this time there are quite a lot of retrojets out there.
What they all have in common is that you can immediately tell that they´re painted in a way to appear as an ironic look at their past and that the airline likes to sonehow play with their image. You immediately know that it´s a new plane, just painted the way the airline livery in question looked like 20+ years ago.

This DE retrojet is different. It just looks plain old to me and a little hard to distinguish from a 40 years old plane.I can imagine that many passengers might not recognize it as a retro livery and instead might fear they have to board a very old plane. At worst some passengers might have fear to fly on that plane.

I would argue that 99% of people who fly on this will never see it's exterior - how often do you board a widebody jet by stairs? I can't remember the last time I did. Maybe a LH (ironically) 747 on a remote stand at FRA, and that was in 2006. Maybe a BA 777 at LHR before the final satellite of T5 opened. But it's pretty rare, even at the smaller fields Condor fly to.

I say well done Condor, and come on BA, let's have the BEA A320 and the BOAC 777 before we're all 100 eh?

I think that's part of the idea, and we give the passengers some credit for not being so dumb they believe it's actually that old.

I think a BOAC B744 would look much better, considering BOAC actually had a fleet of 13 B747s in those colours. I mean if you want a special livery, it beats the pooping pigeon hands down.

There is an element of the TCX/CFG livery if you look at the belly, the turquoise belly paint shape is visible in a slightly different shade.

Overall another superb retro jet here's hoping that Thomson decide on a BY retro 767
