Apologies in advance if a) this has already been discussed and b) I saw it on Wikipedia, so there's always a possibility that it isn't true, but on the Manchester Airport page, it states that Aeroflot is going to start flying from SVO to MAN - but not until 10th March 2014!!!
a) is this true?
and
b) if so, why such a late start date? Surely they don't start announcing routes that early?!!

Hopefully they will expand to more places if and when the Visa free Moscow bill gets approved by the Russian government. Basically they want to make city breaks to Moscow visa free for Europeans and others for upto 3 nights to promote tourism. Its expected to increase inbound tourist numbers and benefit the economy by 120BN Rubles. This can only help SU and others also.

Several problems with UK-Russian political relations due to a certain murder case linked to the Kremlin damaging trade in addition to the visa issues imposed on traveller.
The current bilateral does 't allow for regional operations and indeed caps services into London at the moment
Just look at the number of flights operated into Germany and France for comparison
The timeframe for this proposed service probably includes for the negotiations and bIlatteral or open sky EU treaty to be concluded

Roughly this time last year DUB was rumoured to be starting for Summer 2012 but it never started leaving S7 alone on the route with rather poor timings and frequencies. SU seem to be pretty conservative when it comes to European expansion
Next Flights: EI DUB-LHR A320, BA LHR-SFO B744, UA SFO-LAS A320, BA LAS-LHR B744, EI LHR-DUB A320

Transaero used to operate to Edinburgh with a weekly service, but the route was suspended a couple of years ago. They also planned to launch flights to Manchester, but I don't know if they ever started, Unless the agreements have changed recently, they certainly used to permit regional operations.

Yes, I thought there was a flight from Edinburgh - Moscow. Any chance of Aeroflot perhaps returning? 2/3 x weekly with an A320? What were the loads like? Do many Russians visit Edinburgh?
For years SU had a presense at DUB and SNN then wound down SNN and eventually DUB when the Irish carrier which they had a codeshare with went bust . Their office at T1 DUB stayed open for some time where they codeshared with OK DUB-PRG-SVO then OK pulled out and later SU closed their office. It was an end of an era and was sad to see them go. Id love to see them back .

The Uk bilateral determines the number of slot rotations between the UK and Moscow.
True it doesn't specify the points at each end. All available slots are currently used ex LHR to Moscow
The Edinburgh service was subsidised by the Scottish executive and at the time bmi weren't occupying the slot allocation ex LHR.
Prior history Aeroflot (Orginal) did operate twice weekly to Manchester twenty years ago !
Transaero never started at Manchester they couldn't secure Government authority.Manchester also lost out with direct service to Moscow and onto Hong Kong with CX previously when bmi objected. bmi were subsequently awarded the London-Moscow- London route themselves as the second UK operator in preference to Virgin.
So fact is without negotiations and amendments regional - Moscow services can't start any time soon and Aeroflot will continue to route regional passengers via KLM and Amsterdam.
