Front page article in the journal today about a very close call in Jan 2011 between a GRU-bound AA 77E and a C-17 off the coast of New Jersey:

I think this is referring to an incident in 2011, the NTSB is now indicating it was ATC mistake:

Another great save by TCAS. The article implies that the AA 777 got a TCAS Resolution Advisory. C-17s have TCAS also and he should have gotten a coordinated maneuver Resolution Advisory also, although the article doesn't state that.

It's just like the DCA errors last week. TCAS is considered the last ditch line of defense, not the primary means of ensuring safe separation, but it's there to save the day, as it did in these cases.
