"The airline blamed a contractor responsible for posting fares and did not say whether it would honor the tickets — even after customer- service representatives promised ticket buyers it would.

El Al promised a decision by later this week."

With the new DOT rules in place regarding mistake fares, good luck not honoring these, LY!

I thought I read that UAL wasn't honoring those first class HKG tickets sold? Did they end up taking them?

UA has only honored the 4-mile tickets for those who began their journeys on or before Sat. 7/21/12 so far, unless the full amount of miles published in the award chart were used.

Find it interesting that LY blamed Tata Consulting Services for this, the filing company they use and yet Tata has been silent.

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

a similar incident happened to EI a few years ago business class tickets were at the price of economy class tickets!

My goodness - LY is going to lose loads of money if they honor these! 5K is quite an impressive number of tickets sold! I suppose it's no surprise as the Jewish community is very tight-knit. Have "mistake fares" ever been purchased in this quantity before I wonder?

They have no choice but to honor the tickets, as per DOT rules.

They might be able to get the money out of the contractor who goofed up though.

5,000 tickets x $1,200 loss per ticket = $6 mil. Not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, and likely some of it is covered by insurance.

I'm skeptical about some of these accidental fares. They just got huge national/international multi-media coverage in their two biggest markets that they accidentally sold some very cheap fares. How many people will now go straight to ElAl.com when looking for cheap flights to see if they've done it again, then subsequently make a purchase there for a normal ticket. At $6 million this case is probably a real deal cock up, but when an airline 'loses' a few hundred thousand and gets this kind of coverage I really have to wonder if it's done on purpose.

The loss isn't six million. It's only difference between the fares, less the increased load factors these tickets bring.

Just like they're flying us to Tokyo for 95 EUR on purpose?

You're forgetting that these tickets were only available on the codeshare flights involving at change of plane in Europe, where other airlines have to be paid to fly passengers to BRU, ZRH, CDG, etc. LY is offering a change to their nonstops for a fee of $75 per ticket (not a bad move on their part).

$6 mil. is the overall lost revenue had the fuel surcharge not been left off. The real hit to LY's bottom line? Who knows.
