Yesterday, Ethiopian Airlines took delivery of their first 787-8, registered ET-AOQ. It's the first of 10 787s Ethiopian has ordered.

Today, they're flying it from PAE to IAD for media and VIP tours. Operating as ET2501 (Flightaware link) , the aircraft is scheduled to land around 2:00 Eastern.

Tomorrow will be its maiden Africa flight, as it operates IAD-ADD. From there, it will begin scheduled passenger service.

I'll be at IAD today for the press event, and hopefully will be able to update the forum with some photos.

Cheers,

AA94

Does anyone know what training all the crew have had? This will be the maiden flight and most crews of other airlines using the 787 had had regional training flights - so seems a bit strange the first flight is IAD - ADD?

IIRC, the IAD-ADD flight is a VIP / delivery flight, part two.

It will come back to Washington for scheduled pax service at some point, but I believe it will be used on regional Africa routes to begin with.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear in my initial post! I will confirm the routes today and update the thread.

Cheers,

IAD will not be a regular route for the 787. As stated this IAD-ADD is just a delivery VIP flight. The 777-200LR is ideal for the restricted heavy payload on the westbound ADD-FCO-IAD run. The 777 goes nonstop ADD on the eastbound run. IAD is used a lot for ET as a fuel stop when they take delivery of a aircraft. All of there 737's stop here.

Obviously, this flight is only a delivery flight, but my understanding is that after a few sectors on short regional routes, for training purposes, ET will put the 787 on the IAD route in place of the 777. I think IAD (via FCO), CAN and JNB will be among its first routes.

The 777LR is far much better than the 787 on ADD-FCO-IAD with the runway length, alltitude, temperature and payload of ADD.

I think it was very clear AA94. You wrote: "Tomorrow will be its maiden Africa flight, as it operates IAD-ADD. From there, it will begin scheduled passenger service." Clearly revenue service will begin once it is in ADD only.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Tomorrow's flight is a revenue flight no matter how you see it. You could buy seats on the flight for 950USD for the past 2 weeks. Starting Sept 20, the flight will replace the 777. By then, the second 787 will be delivered (17 Sept).

No. You can buy tix on the flight, I almost did but had to psss due to job commitments. And you could buy both B and Y cabin tickets. VIPs will take a tour of the plane while on the ground at IAD, perhaps some will fly to ADD as well. ET AFAIK always has revenue service out of IAD for all new a/c.

So tomorrow, there will be 2 flights IAD-ADD - ET501 (77L) and ET2501 (787), and both are revenue flights.

I recall way back that TWA had a special relationship with EAirlines. Is there a simlar relationship with a western carrier or do they supply their own local pilots, crew and other employees.

Indeed, ET was founded with technical help from TWA. But since 1973 or so, it has been fully managed and operated by Ethiopians.

The first route should be IAD according to Ethiopian's website after first bedding in the aircraft on it's African network. This is once the carrier receives it's second aircraft.

It was great being able to witness touchdown 50 feet away from the runway and then tour the plane. This plane looks great in ETH colors.

Okay everyone, finally back at a computer. Here are some photos and impressions from the day.

Photos (including cabin): http://flic.kr/s/aHsjBr4MqC

Schedule: The 787 will operate revenue service tomorrow (ET2501 is bookable). It will operate a special sightseeing flight around Mt. Kilimanjaro on Saturday, August 18th. After that, it will go into service operating regional Africa flights. '

From September 20, the 787 will alternate with the 77L on the IAD-ADD-FCO-IAD. No word on what the actual schedule will be.

Schedules up to 03SEP can be found here: http://ethiopianairlines.com/en/info/787_schedules.aspx

Impressions:

* The aircraft is very spacious, especially in Business. I think that's due in part to the overall airy feeling of the 787, but also because ET has done away with a middle bank of overhead bins in J.

* The Y cabin seems to have more space than is standard. I really wouldn't mind spending 8+ hours on this aircraft, even in the back. Legroom for me (and I'm 5'10") was absolutely sufficient.

All in all, seems like a comfortable aircraft, and the people of Ethiopia are extremely proud to operate it. Today's event was a spectacular one, and I wish ET well in all their future endeavors. They really seem well-put together and like a strong airline.

EDIT: clarity
