Hi

That is a very interesting video! I really liked how the DC-10 was so new then and now airlines are getting rid of them and converting them into cargo like what FX did.

Shows how times have changed!

That was a real Cleveland Hopkins time machine. If one looks closely there are shots of a straight-pipe United Boeing 720 in perhaps its last year of service, the new Concourse C and a ramp agent with an old paper ticket and a woman boarding the ultra-modern jetway to her aircraft. Back then CLE had a lower-level ticket area with small TV monitors showing arrivals and departures with a giant monitor on the upper departure level. Lastly, behind the WEWS interview is a gate with a partially cut-off yellow SUNBIRD sign proudly advertising nonstop UAL Boeing 727-100 flights to sunny Miami from perpetually overcast northeast Ohio.

To continue the Blast From the Past here is an aerial oblique of Cleveland Hopkins taken in April of 1967 just before the construction of Concourse C. An American Airlines Lockheed Electra sits at the end of Concourse A with an Eastern 727 and perhaps Lake Central Convair turboprops occupying Concourse B. http://csudigitalhumanities.org/exhibits/items/show/63

That was the same time period and place I started plane spotting. In the late 1960's my older sisters would drive me to the airport for me to spend hours watching and photographing. Then in the early 1970's when I got my own drivers license, I was a pretty regular visitor to Cleveland Hopkins.

Additionally, my house was about 15 miles NW of the airport and under the take-off pattern of most westbound departures. I knew all the wide-body departures and most of the DC-8, and could identify them as they passed over.

As I've lamented before, I threw out cartons of photos from those days when I grew up and moved out. Never realized anybody else would ever be interested in such crazy photos. A fair amount of them were taken with an old SpeedGraphic Graflex camera with roll-film adapter for some stunning details in photos from large negatives.

Yeah, I immediately recognized the Sunbird sign. Remember when CLE-MIA grew to a 747 and CLE-TPA was a DC-10?

That DC-10 has hot section reversers!

That looks the way I remember CLE looking when I worked for BN there!
