Hi everyone, I haven't searched the forum, but does anyone in the Baltimore area know why there's a B-17 cruising over the city? I saw it yesterday as well, and was curious about it. Cheers!

Cheers to you as well! I saw one in New York, flying over the Hudson River, two or three months ago. So maybe it is the same aircraft. It is definitely one of the last few B-17s still airworthy.

That plane was in SYR for a few weeks and I saw it parked in GS area 2 weeks ago. It was interesting seeing that plane on the ground and watching a US A319 take off and thinking of how much time has gone by between those planes in terms of age and technology.

Wow, thanks for the info! I didn't realize that they were offering rides (albeit expensive). Lucky me to catch it on the only days it was touring.

Rides were 450.00. Now, if this was a DC-6? A Connie? I would be the first one in line, just like when AA had their DC-3 at BWI a couple of years ago!

I took a ride in "Aluminum Overcast" in Oct 2009 when she was in the Atlanta area, was a great ride.

My most memorable historic aircraft ride was in 1999 at the Oshkosh fly-in (sorry to go off-topic for a sec) in a Ford Trimotor. Completely exhilirating experience! If I had the time (and money) to spare, it would've been an amazing experience to get a ride in the Fortress. As it was, it was eye-opening just to see her buzz the city. Cheers everyone!

This is how most flying B-17s (and similar aircraft) survive. They are not cheap to operate and maintain. I help crew a B-25, and the per hour operating cost is over $3,000.

If you ever have the opportunity to go for a ride, and can spare the money, do it! You may not get the opportunity again, and it keeps the aircraft in the air, where it belongs. It is a very unique and awe-inspiring experience.

I rode in Aluminum Overcast in 2010 & 2011 at Oshkosh. It was a fantastic experience and will certainly do it again. One of the men on my flight last year was a veteran who flew B-17's during WWII.
They actually base the B-17 out of ATW and its about a 25-30 minute flight that takes you over AirVenture & loops back around; amazing seeing that event from the air. Well worth the money for an aviation enthusiast.

Just saw it cruize over the golf course I work at a little while ago super low on it's way back to MTN. Love hearing those engines! Truly amazing seeing her flying around town!
