TAA/Australian DC-9s In The 1980s

What sort of routes did TN DC-9s fly in their last years in the 80s?

Were the cabins refitted at any point with new overhead lockers etc or did they retain their 1960s interiors to the end?

They were refurbished in from memory early 80's when the camel hump colors were introduced. Enclosed overhead lockers were installed and I'm sure indirect lighting. Not those 2 exposed strips that used to run the length of the cabin!
Something was also done to try and quieten the cabin and I'm sure it had a catchy name but I can't recall it. I started work at TAA in 1986 and the DC-9 used to do MELBNE, up the QLD coast and probably SYD/MEL ADL etc.

DC9's were definitely on the MEL-ADL run, and I think the MEL-LST/HBA sectors as well.

IIRC the DC-9 made some appearances as ASP. I seem to recall them on ASP-DRW, maybe the ASP-ADL flights as well. The 727 was more common, but I seem to remember them (lived in ASP from Aug 82 to Aug 84).

I found this pic of a TAA D9S interior with open hat racks. It was after the introduction of first class and features converter seats. The AB seats were fixed width. The converter DEF seats were are narrower triple unit than the fixed Y seats to allow for the fixed AB seats. Obviously the width when used as part of the F cabin was standard with the AB seats.

In short, Yes. Examples being:
VH-TJS final flight SYD-MEL TN511 Aug 23 1989
VH-TJT final flight SYD-MEL TN533 Aug 23 1989.

A number of ac flew Bass Straight as their final flights. e.g
VH-TJL LST-MEL TN2942 Sep 29 1986

There was the milk run service (at times twice per week) from BNE - MKY - TVL - CNS - GOV - DRW - PHE - PER and return.
VH-TJU (the last DC9 to see pax service in OZ) flew some internal services within QLD during the pilots dispute of 1989 and its last revenue service was TN479 BNE - MEL Nov 17 1989.

They were also flying sectors like SYD-TVS & CNS non stop in the mid to late 1980s and probably some other tourist type flights, especially on the week ends.

My last flight on a TN DC9 was BNE-PPP In August 1989 I would have done PPP-BNE a fortnight later but the start of the Pilots Dispute meant I had to get to Mackay where I was flown out on an Australian Airlines 733 .

The TAA DC9s were retired shortly thereafter DC9s were neverainted in the colors of Australian Airlines Ansett had retired their DC9s in 1983 and replaced them with 732s, a type never operated by TAA

That pilots dispute was handy... I went out to the airport and found a TAA DC9 Safety Card on a desk by the gates. That came home with me. In addition, I went underneath the desks to the Boarding Pass printers in both the Ansett and Australian Airlines terminal and ended up with about 20 blank boarding passes from each airline. Still have them at home actually   The things we do at age 13!

Meanwhile, it's good that TAA never operated the 732. Ansett didn't have them long before dumping them for the 733s, in their great fleet choices throughout the 1980s.

I would have loved to have flown on a TAA DC9. Actually, I would have loved to have flown TAA or Australian Airlines - I think I only started flying them when they were already Qantas domestic. They were a much better airline than Ansett on many occasions throughout the 20th century.

That said, I remember a brochure that from Ansett showing the Orient Express inspired interiors for the new A320s - they did look goooorggggeeeeooouusssss!!



I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Roughly 30% of all 732s built were delivered between 1982 and the end of production. I've read that Boeing could have sold quite a few more 732s but ended production early to avoid cannibalizing sales of the 733.

Major ports meaning MEL, CBR, SYD, OOL, BNE, ROK, MKY, TVL, CNS, as well as others I have mentioned, plus a few smaller ports depending on the season, or as others have pointed out, weekends.
There was a once weekly service that did BNE - MKY - TVL - CNS - PORT MORESBY (overnight at Moresby) (TN1310) then using a QF flight number (QF 296/297) MORESBY to HONIARA and return to BNE by the aforementioned ports (TN 1311). This service commenced very early 70's, and I am not aware of when it was discontinued, but I suspect it ceased when Airlines of PNG came into being after independence was granted.

yes I can remember boarding the TAA DC 9s from the back stairs at Hobart when I was a kid and going to Melbourne for holidays. Both Ansett and TAA ran on the very odd occasion a 727 to Hobart but it was mainly DC 9s on the Bass Straight run. My last flight in a DC 9 was January 1986 Melbourne to Hobart.
