WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

AA ORD-FWA DEC 4>3 JAN 4>3 FEB 4>3 MAR 4>3

Normally, when AA does this, FWA-DFW goes from 2 to 3 departures a day for the winter and early spring. When mid-spring hits, FWA-DFW goes back to 2 departures and FWA-ORD is increased to 4 departures until winter hits. This keeps AA (Eagle) at a consistent 6 daily departures at FWA.

Did they load the extra DFW flight, or did it not return this year? Oddly enough, AA has been growing faster than any other airline at FWA... they need to stay at 6 departures a day total.

UPDATE: Checked AA.com, and it looks like the third DFW isn't returning for the winter. Funny, because FWA needs the seats (80% LF on average across all carriers, with G4 LFs in the high 90s).

This if I understand correctly would open up at least one daily a in-peremeter slot. I'm curious where it will be used. Although short I've always thought PHF-DCA would be a good route connecting each city to F9 larger jet service.

The difference is that UA has four US gateways to PEK: SFO/ORD/IAD/EWR. Cutting a handful of frequencies will still give UA 4 nonstop flights to the United States on most days.

DL ATL-BTR NOV 9>8 JAN 9>8 FEB 9>8 MAR 10>9 APR 10>9

Like some of the other recent mainline additions out of ATL starting this fall, they are cutting 1 CRJ flight, and adding a D95 in place of another. This marks the return of DL mainline to BTR.

*DL JFK-ELM NOV 1.0>0 DEC 1.0>0 JAN 1.0>0 FEB 1.0>0 MAR 1.0>0 APR 1.0>0

This coincides with many of the JFK seasonal TATL reductions. Most of the traffic flows over DTW anyways.
To offset the reduction of 1x CRJ on JFK-ELM, they are adding a few more seats on DTW-ELM by bumping up another CRJ to a CR7, making DTW-ELM (4x CR7, 1x CRJ) in November.

This was inevitable as soon as they launched ATL-COU to start to transition the service over from MEM.
That being said, COU is one of the few EAS success stories. The route historically was STL-COU, then was rebid back in 2008 when Mesaba won the bid and started flying SF3s to MEM. They upgauged to CRJs and are now able to transition to ATL. Plus, now COU is getting F9 service.

These are all holiday cancels that UA does every year. Nothing to see here as none of these imply weak performance for any of the routes in question. Premium traffic dries up to Asia for these holidays in particular: Nov = Thanksgiving, Dec = Christmas/New Years, Feb = Chinese New Year.

Everytime a route gets eliminated you say "cue the music"

This route seems so insignificant to the network out of MEM. Here's the thing: Once we see non-DL, other airline hubs get snapped from the network, that's when we can cue the music.

CVG-PHX, for example, is cuing the music.....but nothing's happened....for now.

I have a question about ZK flights: What's their load factor and their performance factor? Every time I check flightaware for something I always see ZK as being either delayed or cancelled. What's going on there?

Some of the MEM-only cities initially went away as the Saabs were retired in 2011.
COU started to transition by initially being split to MEM & ATL, now all-ATL (I wouldn't be surprised to see an MSP-COU flight down the route)
DAL switchs from MEM to ATL effective in September

The only MEM-only markets include:
GLH
PIB
TUP

UPDATE: Checked AA.com, and it looks like the third DFW isn't returning for the winter. Funny, because FWA needs the seats (80% LF on average across all carriers, with G4 LFs in the high 90s).

Yield > High Load factors

It very well could have been that yields aren't strong enough to warrant a 3rd DFW flight during the winter. They might be willing to let the cheap seats pax go away in exchange for filling the seats with higher fares.

Shocked. Is B6 pulling out of PHX? Why even bother with a city for 1 flight a day to NY and 1 flight a day to BOS? This is the peak season. Always was 2 a day.

"AA JFK-SFO SEP 5>4 OCT 5>4 NOV 5>4 DEC 5>4 JAN 5>4 FEB 5>4 MAR 5>4"

And the pulldown has begun as we all suspected. Not surprising with NH now in the market. Wouldn't be surprised to see this cut completely.

Seasonal pulldown, but I also agree that UA will exit this market soon, they just are not tipping their hand right now.

Going year round? Nice

And it goes daily too, maybe PDX is finally being noticed as a better place to change planes with AS/QX than SEA. I hope to see more cities in the AS system connected to the PDX hub, mitigating the impact on SEA at busier times, especially QX

UA SFO-IAD JAN 11>9 FEB 11>10

With the 767s and 772s gone from SFO-IAD, it's become *anything* they can tow out of the hanger. Last Saturday there were 319s, 320s, and 757s -- almost every hour on the hour. Our scheduled 319 was upgauged to a 320 at the last minute and four lucky people got gate upgrades (I was 2E   ) . We left at 5:45pm and arrived at Dulles 2am Sunday morning. In the interim, dinner and (multiple) drinks were delicious -- I could barely walk to the Aerotrain. Sounds like chaos, but it was fun.

To the point, UA could fill anything they can throw on SFO-IAD.

I don't think so but it is weird that they're doing this. Maybe it's competition with airlines and B6 unable to keep up for the time being.

It has been 1x a day since May and prior to that it varied between 1x and 2x depending on the month/day of week. The only periods where it has been 2x daily recently has been in March and April.

Also, January is not traditionally a peak season for travel to anywhere. Even travel to "sun spots" is lower when compared to December or late February/March.

Could this be the very beginning of a ramp-up to Sochi-2014? Many have noticed that Sochi is a year-round Black Sea resort and not a trek to the Urals. Perhaps in the future this route could go daily.

This route never made sense...and wasn't deserved by TUL in the first place.

25 Cubsrule : It was a maintenance ferry they sold seats on - not sure what TUL "deserving" the service has to do with anything.
