When BA acquired Dan-Air London in 1988, the 737-300's that came along with it had a short career with BA. They were disposed a short time after the merger. With the order of the 734, why were these aircraft considered incompatible with the rest of the fleet? BA being in the middle of very profitable period, why would they choose to hold on to the 732 fleet over the 300? A few were delivered from Boeing in BA colors during that time and then being withdrawn by 1992.

BA acquired Dan Air in 1992, although Dan Air's 733s arrived in 1988 IIRC. At the time a lot of aircraft passed through BA operation for short stints - IIRC BA's first 733 came along in 1988 for a bit, from Maersk.
The most likely situation is that the 732s were owned/paid for, and the 733s were leased. BA went on to operate the 733 until 2009.

This is not the case. No B737-300s were delivered direct to BA until around 1999 when they took around 7 leased aircraft to be based at Manchester. The last remaining B737-400s from the Dan Air order were delivered to BA and served for many years.

G-BOZB, a 737-3L9 (24219/1600) was delivered direct to BA from Boeing in 1988. BA leased four 737s from Maersk Air, and while three served with Maersk for a few months before moving to BA, G-BOZB was delievered to BA in BA colours. The four aircraft returned to Maersk once BA started taking delivery of its 737-436 aircraft.
At Gatwick, BA only took on three 737-300s from Dan-Air so they were in effect a small odd-ball subfleet. It made sense to let them go and continue to operate the 737-400s it took on (larger fleet) and the 737-200s it alreday had (BA had a fleet of 42, the oldest of which was delivered in 1980 and the youngest in 1985).

Ahhhhhh I DO remember these. They were based in Berlin for IGS services were they not? Kind of below the radar but I do remember them, I had friends who grumbled they were hard to see as they were Tegel based and only turned up very oocasionally at LHR, they were all leased from and returned to Maersk Air.

Does Comair still fly the 733 and the 734? I flew on each of those within South Africa five years ago. The 200s were already gone at that time, the 300s and 400s were both still there. I imagine thaT the plan is to replace them with A319s in the near future.

I just looked back at my BA Junior Jet Club log book (it was quite cool at the time!) and in April 1988 I flew on a 737-300 from STR to LHR, sadly the reg of the aircraft is not written down but was signed by the pilot. I do recall being quite excited about the flight as it was a 'different' and very new aircarft at the time certainly a cut above the -200!

BA had four 737-300s (between about 1988 and 1992 (BOZA/BOZB/CMMP/CMMR - the last two carrying the last three letters of their OY- registrations) before the acquisition of Dan-Air, which were leased from Maersk Air. They were used on UK and European services and I think some were delivered from the factory straight to BA but they were Maersk aircraft and returned to Maersk when the leases expired as they then wanted them back.
They later acquired two (SCUH and BNNJ) with the take-over of Dan-Air but by that time, the -300s were misfits in the fleet and SCUH was a very early 737-300 with under-rated engines, so both were disposed of. BNNJ was leased out to Air Foyle for a summer season and operated charter flights ex MAN and LBA, SCUH went off to the USA rather quickly.
The third BA adventure with the 737-300s was the introduction of the new aircraft leased from GECAS which went into the BA Regional operation to replace the last of the One-Elevens. They proved too big and too expensive and they were phased out in favour of the Avro RJs being moved out of Gatwick, so were returned from lease and some moved into Go, I think.
Fourth adventure was the introduction of second-hand 737-300s into Gatwick with the five G-LGT* aircraft between 2001 and 2009 which were then phased out along with the -500s in favour of a standard -436 fleet at Gatwick.
The fifth is about to start with the bmibaby aircraft?!!
