The aviation ministry has waived landing charges for all cargo or passenger aircraft landing at Sri Lanka's international airport.

The landing charges have been waived to offset the high 'war-risk' insurance premiums enforced on international airlines, after the airport and military airbase at Colombo was attacked by Tamil Tiger rebels last month, the ministry said.

After the attack, the concession had only been offered to aircraft carrying more than 200 passengers.

Cathay Pacific Airways has already stopped flights to Colombo, while other airlines have scaled down operations and are using smaller and older planes to reduce insurance rates.
