This week San Bernardino County supervisors approved formation of a Joint Powers Agreement with the City of Ontario to form the Ontario International Airport Authority. The new agency would take control of ONT if they can get it from LAWA.
The OIAA will have a 5 member board consisting of two city council members, the county supervisor whose district includes ONT, and the other two will be at-large members from the airport's market area, which includes. Riverside County has not been guaranteed a spot even after being active in supporting local control of ONT.
Over 100 cities in the area have endorsed local control of ONT. ONT serves an area of 2.5M residents with a large affluent population in addition to the pockets of despair in the surrounding area that have become a staple for any thread where the subject of ONT comes up.
Over the past few years of declining traffic ONT has maintained a ranking between 57 and 61 of the busiest airports in the US, and is third busiest in the area, behind LAX and SNA, ahead of BUR, PSP, and LGB.
