Anyone Else Want To See Another Manufacturer?

I personally would like to see another major airliner manufacturer to compete with Boeing and Airbus. I miss the diversity provided by Lockhead and MD. I realize the Russians still produce large airliners (Ill...spp.?) but I wonder if there will ever be a market that can support another larger, mass producing company. Or maybe some of the RJ producers will get into the larger aircraft business. I know it's doubtful, but I'd love to see it happen. Any thoughts?

Personally I would like to see Lockheed & Fokker back in the game, but in reality, that's not going to happen again. But Bombardier & FairchildDornier both have a good chance with their respective regional jets. Maybe they can even produced something on the scale of the 717. The world & the airline industry can support a third major player. People look at both Boeing & Airbus and wondered out loud, "Is that all we have to choose from???".  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

There is another regional jet manufacturer getting into the business. The name I believe is Alliance. Also, all these current regional jet manufactures have plans to build planes in the 110 seat category, yet the Bombardier one has been put on hold due to the success of is CRJ's.

The world knows that Russians are capable of making fine airliners- but their product support (or lack thereof) is one of the biggest reasons why Russian jets are not flying off the assembly lines in the west.
Mitsubishi of Japan and Hyundai of Korea have the experience and technology in making crucial parts for airliners. If Mitsubishi (or any other Asian firm) can look after support and assure potential customers of the new airliners' reliability, I'll bet it'll be a successful venture (albeit not financially).
Think about it, Russia and Asia combined has got to be the most promising, lucrative market for any manufacturer. If this new consortium can establish itself as Airbus did in its hometurf (Europe), it'll be a formidable contender to A&B- probably forcing one of them out of business.

I don't believe in Alliance. I have heard that Alliance wanted to design a new plane. The segment where Alliance wants to operate has (wil have) a lot of competitiors. To many for a new company. If Alliance is ever going to build aircraft, it will probably license build Avro/Canadair/Embraer aircraft.

Perhaps the R&D/start-up costs are too great for a new manufacturer in this era. Not to mention that Boeing (and even Airbus now) have too much tradition and solid reputations for another fledgling company to jump into the market. Perhaps a company doing military work can get into the commercial avaition business. Basically, I just want to see airlines having a more diverse set of options when updating their fleets.

Nothing has been heard of Alliance for about a year, think they can be ruled out.
R & D costs for a new airliner are immense, and increasingly a multi-national exercise.
The last time Japan went it alone on an airliner was the prop. YS-11 in the late 60's, they got their fingers burnt there.
With the state of Japan's economy, and the chaos in Russia, I would seriously doubt that they could get it together, and the two nations have traditionally not exactly seen eye to eye.
For jetliners at least, it's just the big two for the forseeable future.

Sure it'd be nice. Just that many billions of dollars needed, not to mention a pretty firm business plan, to finance it all. But, fact of the matter is, it's going to get sort of humdrum, from here on in, for the next few years anyway (just look at all the animated "A380 vs. BSC" discussions around here, so much spinning of wheels.. and neither's even started to be stitched together yet!)

Can always imagine though, I suppose  Smile

(and on the RJ front, even less 'excitement' --if you can call it that-- on that front. "New deluxe" ones, are only really going to be different by giving four or five more inches of ceiling room down the aisles. Dornier's even going to have 3-2 seating, sort of like a 146. Other than that small detail, seems the NG RJs won't differ much, cabinwise)

the IPTN N2130, it looks like an A320/737 crossbread, maybe like the Dassault Mercure...

is that what it was, i forget the name (owned by Air inter)

Also, That Asian consortium planning to build a small passenger aircraft, smaller than the A318

IPTN was a vanity project, they have not sold one aircraft outside of Indoneisa, the N250 twin turboprop flew a few years ago, no money to advance that programme.
When the ecomony went through the floor, that was effectively the end of any IPTN projects outside of licence-building light transports and helicopters, even they are mostly for that nation's military.
