Cathay 744 B-HUD At MAN, Why?

Was taking departure photos this morning at Manchester Airport and caught Cathay Pacific passenger 744 B-HUD taking off. Looked like it was going West, at least initially. As Cathay only has cargo flights to MAN, anyone knows what this passenger plane was doing here? Diversion from LHR?

If you were looking at the Main Gate area, these were G-MKCA and G-MKGA parked since MK Airlines folded in 2008/2009.

I'm very surprised CX is retiring a sub 20 year old 744. I just assumed they'd keep them for a few more years, or sell it on to another operator/conversion.

The 744 in CX operation needs around 90% load factor to make money because of the fuel prices. This has been discussed in other threads. Given the costs of a D check and engine overhaul costs, retirement is the only reasonable option. We have 9 777-300ERs being delivered in 2013 and a cut back in our longhaul schedule for winter 12/13. This is allowing several 744s to be retired. Our passenger 744fleet will be halved by the end of next year!

I think it is safe to say they paid themselves off, and then some. The earlier plan was to convert all of them to BCFs, they did not turn out as good as the brochure. So the options are, give the aircraft away to your competitors for X, or sell them for scrap and parts which is worth more than X and does not leave your seat product in the hands of your competitors.

The positive out of this should be more parts available for the existing 744 fleet in other airlines to keep them economical for longer.

Yes, very sad to see this fall from grace.

It is a shame the JumboHostel lot at ARN are not looking to expand their product across some more airports. The nice thing with that model is that the majority of the parts can still be used for spare as the plane becomes a static.

Probably a combination of the cost of ferrying the aircraft as well as how much each scrapyard is willing to pay.

It is indeed an unusual sight to see a CX 747-400 heading off into retirement. One of the first books I ever read regarding aviation eagerly anticipated the delivery of Cathay's 747-400s to the fleet! Does anyone remember the Kai Tak based L-1011 Tristars?????

What is the monthly cost of a 19 year old 747-400 in comparison to a 1 year old 777-300ER? Aren't Cathay's 744s bought and paid for? Cathay's accountants have made mistakes before, ala dumping the 747-200s due to "higher" sector costs than a new A330. Sector costs are one thing but the overall cost of the lease/payment, insurance etc needs to be included. Time marches on but we shall see where CX sits in a few years with having to pay off plenty of new 77Ws and A350 series aircraft all at once.

Ah no, not another airline ditching 747s! I had my first ever CX B744 flight only last June, ending an 18 year gap between 747 rides (The last being in 1994 on flight EI133 SNN-BOS only months before EI retired their 747 fleet). I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was great to finally fly the worlds most iconic aircraft with one of the world's most iconic airlines. Sure, the A330 on the HKG-MEL leg of my trip was quieter and the seats were a little bigger and more comfortable, but it wasn't a B747. I can't wait to my first trip home to Ireland for another chance to fly a CX 747 but it seems like I shouldn't leave it too long from the sounds of it.

Very sad developments at CX, but most of the 744s in the green fleet is over 20 years old and CX utillisation quite high as much as I know. B-HOT must be way over 100.000 hours, -HUD wont be there as its 3 years younger.

Sigh, whats more boring than a bunch of 77Ws replacing the 747! CX should finally order REAL planes again, 748s or A380s, come on!

Sad to see Cathay parking so many 744 especially when they expanded the fleet by buying several ex-Singapore Air Pratt powered 744's. Now the question is will Cathay ever buy anything bigger then a 777 ?

Sadly, like so many airlines who for so long the B747 formed the backbone of their fleet, it is hard to see CX ever ordering anything bigger than the B777. Perhaps we might see a small fleet of A380s to operate on some of the premium routes like HKG-LHR but the bigger picuture is that this move by CX means that we are witnessing yet more boring twins taking over the skies. I owe my interest in aviation to the B747 so it is painful to see them disappearing so rapidly.

I hope the B747-8 starts to pick up more orders because like all other 747 models, it to is a beauty. Sadly, it is hard to see it gaining any significant share in the passenger market.

Some 744s are due for heavy maintenance and several engines are due for an overhaul (that alone is $8 millions a piece). Cathay isn't retiring the 744s to save money on fuel (although it certainly helps), but to avoid the expense of maintaining them.

Often scrapping is done by auction. CX would include the cost to ferry to the site and then pick the highest bid. CX would be free to specify other particulars. e.g., return the engines and seats.

The other option is CX puts out a scrapping plan and the yard bids to execute. e.g., CX wants the parts and the yard bids cost and schedule.

As Lightsaber noted above, the aircraft are sold to third parties who then scrap them. Kemble has an established scrapping facility. See below:

The ex-Cathay Pacific Airways B747-400s are powered by both RB211 and PW4056 engines. The aircraft will enter the GA Telesis disassembly production line in Kemble, UK, next week, with the disassembly and remarketing being led by GA Telesis, UK and GA Telesis LLC.
